Highest component/cable ratio?
John, If you don't want to hear the differences, just don't listen for them. Just run with the same set of cables/IC's and you can be blissfully ignorant (or really smart). :-)
6922 Sovtek Variances ???
At last, a grrreat use for those old Sovteks. I can save them for future resale. Who'd a thunk! At last a perfect solution. Are used pulls going to be valuable too? :-)
The best George Bizet Carmen on vinyl
"Did Callas ever do Carmen?" Google or check out some of the internet review sites. Some folks think she was the 'best' Carmen. :-)Personally I like Maginnes/Domingo/Maazel on Erato. Beecham's version is lovely as well, but in mono.FWIW.
Shortening my short list – Thiel 3.6 vs VMPS rm30?
As a past Thiel 3.5 owner who played with these for 3+ years I would have a hard time recommending them in a 'hard' room, especially if it is a small room which doesn't allow for a lot of clearance from side walls and/or in which you cannot kill 1...
Do I need a pre-amp?
In theory using a pre-amp shouldn't be necessary and it certainly is a 'wait and see' thing. However, the synergy issue is always present and the insertion of a specific tube pre-amp with selected tubes could change the sound/tone of the source if...
weak tube symptoms?
Noise such a crackling/popping can indicate a tube going bad but it can also indicate the lack of proper pin contact in the socket and/or a build up of corrosion, dirt, etc. Some times just removing and replacing the tube will solve the problem as...
6922 Sovtek Variances ???
IMHO old Sovteks and old 6h23's not only look alike they sounded alike in my ARC SP10II, and I think they were made by the same company and just have different designations. I really couldn't pick up a difference tonally or clarity wise. Compared ...
Genelex Gold Lion KT-88 reissued tubes
SED(Wing C)6550's. Rugged, dependable, excellent quality. I've had one bummer in the past 10 years and it was too hot to bias in properly so it never got used. I bought it about 7 years ago but didn't use if 'til about 3 years ago. No other proble...
Equipment: To Hide or not to Hide
I'd hide everything if I could. Unfortunately remote controls and heat from tubes makes that difficult. I'd even hide my speakers if I could. I hate to admit to the unwashed that I so enjoy such an arcane hobby. :-) Besides I find all of that stuf...
Highest component/cable ratio?
I don't know if you'd call my present components a 'high end system' but I'm still using IC's I purchased 10 years ago which cost about $100 a meter/pair, and I backed into some budget speaker cable to experiment with long cable lengths and I have...
Wadia CD players direct to power amps opinions
I have been trying to use a 302 with tube amps and have come really close with some old high power tube mono's. Did all of the audiophile things but the sound just kept drawing attention to the audiophile aspects of'sound'. Not bright, but just a ...
Triode versus Ultralinear/Pentode
What does Roger Majeski say about the potential result of the conversion? Benefits v liabilities? There is always some trade off - what does he think they are with his amp?
ARC Reference 3 preamp: tube character?
Tvad has read my mind. To get what you are looking for I'd suggest your considering some older, perhaps even vintage, pre-amps even if you have to have them reconditioned. Early ARC like my SP10II might do, or MFA's or CAT's which were close to SO...
Genelex Gold Lion KT-88 reissued tubes
Geraldm121, Did you by chance try the 6550's in the Cayin and the GL's in the ARC? I'm using SED KT88's in the Cayin and I'm curious. I tried some SED 6550's and found them a bit dry in that unit (they remain my 6550's of choice in other amps).
one speaker louder than the other
Switch the small tubes, channel to channel, in your pre-amp. See if the volume reduction changes speakers. If that doesn't make a difference, and especially if you have a critically aligned and triangulated set up, check your listening chair'a pos...
