The "Broken Blue Point Special Club"
Wow... old thread, but add me to the list... I was just rediscovering my 15 yr old BPS, and unknowingly snagged it with a cleaning rag today.  I have 2 more expensive carts, but they are lower output, and I was quite enjoying this totally hiss fre...
When Did Your System Disappear?
My system in college LITERALLY disappeared..... it got STOLEN!  It was a blessing in disguise though..... it was all JVC Japanese mid-fi (1984), and this event forced me to seek out a high end audio store that introduced me to NAD and Boston Acous...
For efficient speakers, how much difference does an amp really make?
I have many speakers, but currently using Zu Dirty Weekends, which are like 97dB/w with a 12ohm impedance.  I've tried 3 different amps on it.  My 120wpc Rotel sounded terrible on them, but my Bryson 4B-ST (reCapped) sounds great.  And...  with re...
How does this make sense, any sense? Any sense at all??
Anybody that buys a Sasha for $38,000 without falling in love with it first deservers to be parted from their money!   I doubt that the KEF sounds anything like the Sasha.  Each has it's own list of pluses and minuses... but each one represents th...
Will Parasound A21 damage my NHT?
Also keep in mind that the exact position of your volume knob does not always play back at the same volume or power output.   If you are playing an older CD, full volume might be at 2 o'clock, but with a newer louder CD, full volume playback, the ...
The midi range, not the tweeter, is the most important driver in a speaker.
The most important frequency to measure is 1842 Hz.  Get that one right, and the rest will be fine.
How much do you need to spend to get digital to rival analog?
It costs me about $12....... for the right CD.     So many times the better format is simply the one that was from the better master.... or better Mastering.  I've have good and crappy versions of the same record in either format.  I love both LP ...
Amps with meters ...
I'd love to have an amp with big meters!  I very nearly pulled the trigger on a Mac, but simply too expensive, and not a fan of the Autoformer.   I'd bet if Emotiva packaged their $1200 amp with nice big analog meters, they could easily sell it fo...
High value, giant killer speakers?
Depends.....  how big is this Giant??   Zu Dirty Weekends at $1000.  It may not be your last speaker, but it should maybe be your first or second.  I have 3 other pairs of speakers in the $5k range, and I am liking the DWs VERY MUCH!  All 4 pairs ...
Any Love For Bryston Here?
I own a 4B-ST & 4B-SST2.... they sound different!  The ST is a bit more lively and dynamic, and the SST2 more refined & controlled.  The ST is the ideal amp for my old B&W 801series2's, whereas the SST is better on speakers that are a ...
Why No McIntosh Recommendations?
Most unlikely combo award goes to:  My neighbor.... driving his 30yr old Cerwin Vega D-9's with a brand new $4500 McIntosh Amp that I procured for him.  He wanted something good, US made, and loved the big blue power meters!!   The Mac.... a clear...
Buy a pair of ten year old $40,000 speakers for $4,000 or new ones at that price point?
My B&W 801 Series 2's were $3500 in 1989, and considered near state-of-the-art.  I bought them in 1999 for $2200.  I've had them now for 20 years, and the drivers are all perfect, as far as I can tell.  The crossovers are another story.... Bei...
I went to THE show and didn't make any friends ...
Most shockingly amazing demo of the show for me was in a room full of restored Altec horn systems.  They were playing ELP's "From the Beginning" from some visitor's CD, and it was a transformative experience!!  Truly mind-blowing....  There was si...
Pioneer SX 780 Receiver compatibility with RSL 4200 studio speakers
It will drive the RSL's just fine, but at 4 ohms, don't connect B speakers and run them at the same time as the RSL's.......  That will strain the amp too much... and it's a very old amp.
How many of us are truly satisfied with their systems?
Very Satisfied.... but always restless.......I also went to THE Show in Long Beach yesterday, and of 62 rooms, I only heard maybe 5 systems that really impressed me.   Most of the rooms had a very boxy 100-ish Hz hoot to them.  I've been to severa...
