20 Year Old Amplifiers compared to 2017
I've tried several times to replace my 20 year old amps with something comparable in price... only to be disappointed.  I own 2 Brystons... I just had my 4B-ST restored (by Bryston... an amazing deal!) and am very happy to have it working again......
Best looking reel to reel
As a teenager in the 80's, the 2 machines I dreamt of owning were the Technics RS-1500, or the Teac X-2000M.  I had neither the funds nor good reason to own one at the time... but now I do, and had just had a Technics 1500 refurbished by J-corder....
Come on people....BASS!
I once found on a boutique microphone manufacturer's website, the misspelling of "base", and wrote them a semi-sarcastic email about it (attempting humor).  The company owner was not amused, and proceeded to list me his extensive credentials in th...
What exactly is colored sound?
You could listen to a dozen different $100k audiophile systems, and guess what, they will all sound different.  You could go into a dozen different recording studio's and listen to their monitors, and guess what?  They will all sound different.  T...
Wilsons are the best speakers in the world
Having heard at least a dozen Wilson demos over the past 20 years, they never fail to bore me with their lack of colorations.  For me, they just seem to suck the life out of music.  Only once was I impressed, but i think it was with just the right...
Why are tweeters so high off of the ground in many tower speakers...
We're gonna need a bigger couch!
What's been your turntable ownership over the years?
Sota Sapphire w/Sumiko MMT arm.....  for nearly 30 years!!I am a gear nut, and I have replaced everything else in my system many times over, but I have never lusted to replace my SOTA.And let's please stop arguing if LP or CDs are better.  Neither...
Is there any advantage to lower efficiency speakers? 87 or below?
Everyone is sort of missing the real cause & effect..... It's not impossible to make drivers and speaker systems that are 97dB efficiency, but they will have far from flat frequency response or tight transient response. (though they can still ...
Why So Many Raidho D3's ?
The important question is..... "What are they buying to replace their ex-Raidho's??   New Raidho's?   Or something else?If they buy the newer ones.... that must mean they were pretty happy with the old ones, and simply have enough money to upgrade...
Class D = Trash?
I just recently tried out, and returned an NAD M22 amp.  My 20 yr old Bryston 4B-ST was misbehaving, so i sent it to them for their restoration service (replacing ALL the electrolytics!).  I thought it was maybe time to update to a new amp, and I'...
When and how did you, if at all, realize vinyl is better?
I LOVE BOTH !!There is both GREAT sounding music and BAD sounding music on both CD and Vinyl.  Don't blame the medium!  Any great sounding mix can be put on CD or Vinyl and sound great...... OR it can be poorly mastered, or over-compressed and sou...
Why does bi-amping speakers sound better?
I am not a fan of bi-wiring, but bi-amping certainly has its merits.  Imagine what the power supply and power transistors are going through in an amplifier to produce full range music.  For bass transients, you have large capacitors being depleted...
Best standalone music server?
Rip directly to the Sony Hap-Z1ES ???  Umm.... i don't see a CD drive on that thing.  I'd likely buy one if it functioned as a CD player too.
High End Amp Price Collapse musings
Pitting Class-D against Class-A is not even a fair argument.  When 95% of all mid-high end amps out in the world are Class-AB.... isn't that where the comparison should be?  I have zero interest in owning a VERY inefficient and costly Class-A or T...
Tyler Acoustics
About 5 years ago i bought a pair of the big D-2's .... MTM center section and (4) 6.5 inch woofers each side.  Tyler was a super nice guy to work with, and we worked out a great looking veneer selection.  The speakers looked fantastic.  But i sim...
