Finally took the Bryston 4B Cubed plunge I own both a 4B-ST (recently reconditioned) and a 4B-SST2, and they sound a bit different from each other. All things considered, I actually prefer the more lively sounding, older ST on most speakers. I've not heard the new cubes yet.
How To Field Questions About Your Audiophile Lifestyle... I work with a bunch of engineers, but I'm the only audiophile. It's the running joke how many speakers I own, and I'll judge the cost of things in speaker-units. A manager that makes the most fun of me will go and play golf on the weekend at a n...
We give up perspective to avoid tone controls One of my full-range listening systems is my home studio where I have access to 3 different hardware equalizers, each in the 3k-$5k price range, (no not graphic EQs). They all sound great, and they each sound different from one another. Each can...
Yanni or Laurel? OMG.... this is so easy to understand I'm embarrassed that it's befuddled so many people. Gee... if only audiophiles had tone controls or worse yet, access to an Eeekqualizer in their systems, they could very easily demonstrate that if you boost...
Is the 2.5 way speaker the ideal home speaker? As a DIY speaker builder, I've logged many hours building & tweaking crossovers, and one big compromise of a 3-way design is the HP filter you have to put on the midrange. This is, at the very least a large capacitor to roll off at ~350 Hz, p...
Oppo Gone - Now What? Bummed at Oppo leaving, but honestly, the lack of streaming apps on the 205 is a deal breaker for me. My 105 is perfect!.... and the idea of teaching my wife yet ANOTHER new way of navigating to Netflix is a discussion i'm not ready for!! Yes I...
Speakers "Disappearing" Achieving the disappearing act is a combination of all 3 things: speaker design, your room, and placement. If you have a speaker with an identifiable coloration, like a hot tweeter or a cabinet resonance, then the speakers will never disappear. ...
Speakers least affected by room acoustics If possible, check out Tannoy speakers. The coincident tweeter is horn loaded, and dispersion is controlled to about 90 degrees. You get minimal high frequency splash off the ceiling and side walls. Plus, being coincident, the midrange is coher...
Why do many discussions about sonic performance disintegrate into technical discusions? So what you like the discussion to disintegrate into??
Is powerfull Amps only for low sensitivity speakes? My home studio speakers are 15" Tannoys with 97db efficiency. Out of the 4 good amps I own, the best match is my 300w/ch Bryston 4B-SST2. That's way overkill on power, but the noise floor is inaudible when using the balanced inputs, and tonally ...
Any Bryston 4B3 amp owners out there? I own a 4B-ST and 4B-SST2, and both sound quite different. Sort of a good thing though, as they match better or worse with different speakers. The ST sounds more exciting, and maybe less refined. It's lived most its life powering my B&W 801...
Can cables of any cost and quality provide bass response missing in my B&W speakers? I've never, ever, EVER been satisfied with the bass from woofers of 8" or less. Yes, the sound can be great... but not "satisfying"... to me. Even when you stack dual 8's or three 6.5's... it always sounds like little drivers working hard to me....
20 Year Old Amplifiers compared to 2017 I've tried several times to replace my 20 year old amps with something comparable in price... only to be disappointed. I own 2 Brystons... I just had my 4B-ST restored (by Bryston... an amazing deal!) and am very happy to have it working again......
Best looking reel to reel As a teenager in the 80's, the 2 machines I dreamt of owning were the Technics RS-1500, or the Teac X-2000M. I had neither the funds nor good reason to own one at the time... but now I do, and had just had a Technics 1500 refurbished by J-corder....
Come on people....BASS! I once found on a boutique microphone manufacturer's website, the misspelling of "base", and wrote them a semi-sarcastic email about it (attempting humor). The company owner was not amused, and proceeded to list me his extensive credentials in th... |
