tube el34 runs hot fan?
I think noromance is on the right track. Tubes are inherently hot.  OP, its normal for tubes to be way too hot to touch. Perfectly normal. Most tubes are hot enough to warm up the top of the amp, at least the area right around them. Anything beyon...
High end stereo preamps? Worth it?
My comparison was they are not. But not quite the way the question is worded, which is asking if its worth separating the preamp from the DAC, etc. That part is definitely worth it. What I mean is not worth it is preamps in general.  Not because y...
Odd problem with TT setup...
millercarbon: A pop to me is more of an electrical kind of thing. But all the electrical glitches I've heard in situations like this the sound cuts out it doesn't pop.So now at last we have our answer: worn internal wiring. Probably internal and o...
Teach me about cartridge 'retipping'
Speakers can be upgraded with different parts. Amplifiers, CD players, phono stages, turntables, tone arms- even speaker cables, power cords and interconnects can be upgraded in the aftermarket. Only phono cartridges cannot. I do have one question...
Teach me about cartridge 'retipping'
I have bought a couple Grace F9 retips from Peter Ledermann - they work wonderfully. Your actual experience then is quite good. Yet we have pictures trying to create the impression that because there's a lot of glue it must be a sloppy job. At lea...
I may need to join A'gon Anonymous (AA)
Its the fantasy life. They should make New Today pages you can flip through backwards like the way women flip through their magazines. Or maybe a virtual store where you see something sparkle off in the distance... Ooh!... and run over to check it...
Soundstage
So the "energy" went left and the "music" went right.Good one.Alternatively, maybe you just got much clearer imaging and are hearing things more left and right of center than you had before.
Preamp LR to sub?
Doesn't matter. I would try without the crossover. The thing with really low bass, you want many different sources. That's why 2 subs is better than one, and 4 is better than two. Crossing over eliminates the KEF from being additional sources of l...
Integrated amp suggestion for Sonus Faber Olympica 2
This is why I never even consider a speaker less than 90dB sensitivity. Preferably 95 or more. Because then just about anything will drive it. Certainly any tube amp 20 watts or more. I would give Dave a call at Raven. See if he thinks a Blackhawk...
How can I establish a reference level?
Waste of time. For the simple reason every recording is at a little bit different level. Some a lot different. Some compressed real bad. But that's the least of it. You're right, your understanding of these terms is a blur. As in, there is none. P...
Odd problem with TT setup...
Most likely its a resonance/vibration problem of some kind. Electrical faults- bad solder joint, frayed or damaged wire - usually results in cut-outs not pops. My first thought was slight bearing wear. Kick drum energy bounces the bearing and when...
Kuzma 4 Point Tonearm
Its all relative. I had a Graham 2.2, and it was a very nice arm, but when I went to the Origin Live Conqueror it was shocking how much better the Conqueror was. Shocking. Even adjusting for its much higher cost, still it was so good I am happy ev...
1st Album you Ever Owned?
keegiam-@millercarbonVery enjoyable post! Have to agree "Nilsson Schmilsson" has stood the test of time better than "Yellow Brick Road." At least you had them both early on.BTW I recall hearing way back then that pressed cardboard egg containers m...
Need Help Identifying Unmarked RCA Interconnects..
If they are DIY, which you sure seem to be saying they are, then what is there to identify?
bridging an amp
pros: increased measured powercons: decreased perceived sound qualityThe vast majority of what you hear the vast majority of the time is the first watt. Unless you are some headbanger driving everything to the max all the time, in which case you d...
