Question regarding subwoofers
The one thing that really matters is the one thing you don't mention: crossover frequency. It should be below 100Hz, and 80Hz is even better.  This is because bass this low in frequency, you cannot localize it. If a sub is putting out any energy a...
DAC Break In Period
Of course you know this is all expectation bias. Or some kind of bias. You listened to a lot of different recordings?? Not the same one over and over again? Meaningless! Auditory memory only lasts a millisecond. No one can hear these differences. ...
What's your definition of an audiophile?
I turned off the turntable, put in a CD, and helped with dinner. An audiophile is one who knows you use a turntable to play captivating sit down and listen to it music, and CD for pass the time background music.
Phono stage thoughts for Benz Micro Ruby Z
Keith Herron offers a discount of I think 10% to anyone who lives outside the area of one of his few authorized dealers. So you are looking at only about $3300. I have the VTPH2A, and until about 2 years ago had a Benz Ruby. The Ruby will sound fi...
TONEARM DAMPING : DAMPED OR NOT ? ? USELESS ? ? WELCOMED ? ?
Comparing two different arms makes it awfully hard to be sure what is responsible for what. Damping works but like I said it depends what we are talking about and how- and how much.   For example take fO.q tape. This stuff is pretty much pure damp...
Wireless or wired?
Zero bass traps in my room. Tried em many years ago. Well a lot of people rave about them. Make it sound like you just can't live without em. Well I tried and tried. Of course they made a difference. Just not an improvement. Thankfully never cost ...
TONEARM DAMPING : DAMPED OR NOT ? ? USELESS ? ? WELCOMED ? ?
Of course they need to be damped. The question is in what way? And how much?
What's your definition of an audiophile?
An audiophile is one who obsesses over every tiny little sonic and technical detail for untold hours, weeks, years, in order to hear for a minute every once in a while music that sweeps him away.
Trade off? New vs used
Depends. Which one sounds better?
Suggestions for replacing the 6550 tube in the ARC Ref 6.
I have tried a bunch of these over the years. Now I just order another set of JJ. When one of the most affordable is also one of the best sounding, what's not to like?
Wireless or wired?
Main idea with multiple subs is to create lots of different bass modes in different locations. Easiest way to do this is put them all around the room asymmetrically. In other words along the walls but each one a different distance from the corner....
Amplifier warm up
Yup. Not surprised. Not the least bit. This all seemed preposterous when I first heard about it back in the 90's. But, as usual, if it can be tested super easy then why waste time arguing? Find out for yoursel! So I left my 1970's era Kenwood am...
What's your definition of an audiophile?
An audiophile is one who will sit in the dark listening to the same track over and over again neurotically second-guessing real vs imagined differences, then claim to be doing all this out of a love of music.
Wireless or wired?
Subs work fine with ordinary hookup wire. Subs aren't super responsive to wire quality the way full range speakers are.  So I would think they would work fine with wireless. For sure the benefit of adding those subs is greater than the difference ...
Do pure copper banana plugs make a difference in the quality of the speaker sound.
Like the man said, don't be neurotic.  Use whatever connector comes on the end of the cable.   Oh, and if you think you're gonna save some money putting your own on the end of some wire and do just as good, you're not. So that's another one you ca...
