$7000 preamp vs $700 receiver - Is the difference THAT significant?
@rabbottmke - too bad you have a dealer who's a jerk. One good thing about buying a used McIntosh -- If in good condition, they hold their value very well. So you'd be able to resell without getting killed. Good luck making the decision!

It will be a lot better. But since you're talking about buying new, why not take home the Mc on trial from a dealer and hear for yourself?

Tweaks you got rid of because they were not effective (enough)?
These things did not work FOR ME:Green pens for CDs.Rings that went around the circumference of the CD.Noise filter on the Ethernet line.Fancy power cords.Fancy interconnects.Fancy USB cables (these days -- they helped back in 1990 or so).Raising ...
Best room treatment
ASC is also excellent IMO. They will make a plan for you at low cost, like GIK. I’ve bought a lot from both and been happy with both. ASC was much earlier with panels that didn't absorb everything, and the ASC approach avoided overdeadening the ro...
Suggestions to place Thiel 3.6 speakers on hardwood floor
Get the little aluminum "saucers" sold by most places like Audio Advisor.Or if you know the thread size of the spikes, replace them with footers from Herbie's Audio Lab. That way, you won't have to be concerned about the spikes coming out of the s...
Versatile, non-fatiguing speakers for a small room under $1500 used or new: advice needed!
>> You should be able to find a used pair of Harbeth P3ESR within your budget. With their ported design, they will work with near wall placement. They don't have a lot of bass.  <<I second the recommendation. However, I think ther...
Does your pet listen to your system?
My previous cat would run to the music room when he heard a string quartet playing. We realized he’d become deaf when he stopped doing that. The current cat comes in to listen, too, but like a middle-aged suburbanite, he falls asleep as soon as the...
Thinking about the good old days...
It’s not just our hearing and vision that deteriorate with age. When we were in our 20s, we were bursting with energy and hormones, we felt immortal, the world was in front of us, and everything was new. Whether at a live concert or on the stereo,...
Power amp recommendation for Harbeth 30.2s
You’ll have to try it to see. Many do like more powerful amps with Harbeths. But to some degree that’s just one factor in choosing an amp that you like with your speakers. The reason the discussions are inclusive is that it’s a matter of taste and...
Proud Harbeth p3esr owner - need help tweaking/troubleshooting
Glad to hear it! I’m using 200/330 wpc into 8/4 ohms. Great sound! You might experiment with something like the Benchmark AHB-2 amp. Compact and superb by all accounts.Earlier, I suggested upsampling in Roon. Here’s the link.
Could Audiogon create some FAQ pages in each Forum Category?
Given the state of audiophilia, you could use the same answer for all FAQs:  "Opinions vary."  ;-)
Now Hear This
I saw the Haydn episode and plan to see more. I enjoyed it a lot. The Hungarian violinist was a kick! Great musician and lively character.
How to physically move large heavy 100lb amplifiers easily (up and downstairs)
A hand truck with pneumatic tires. You also NEED one or two CAMLOCK STRAPS to hold the item to it.
If you could, what live performances would you enjoy re-living?
Charles Lloyd at the Village Vanguard around 1978 or so. Just an incredible evening! -- though he is always inspiring.Oh, and I just thought of Leon Thomas, singing at CBGB (yes, that one) around the same time, maybe a few years earlier. What verv...
