I'm pretty excited about my new room i'm building
I have a room (below grade) on a slab here in Portland, OR. It had an engineered cork floor, installed at the suggestion of the contractor. It was really gorgeous and softer and warmer underfoot than wood or Pergo.Water vapor passes through any co...
dithering JRiver output down to 18 bits
I am not -- the plugins I've used do only 16 bits, 24 bits, 32 bits. Still, I would like to offer related advice. When you find your plugin, if it offers several types of dither, listen before you decide which to use. I did some recording a few ye...
Need help
Have you thought of putting the turntable on a shelf mounted to the wall? That's what I did when floor vibration was affecting mine. At that time (20 yr ago), Target made a reasonably priced wall shelf.
Subwoofer placement - does it matter?
@emergingsoulIf I need to measure it, it seems it can’t be heard. Is that a question, or have you made up your mind? You certainly will hear that bass is uneven. How well you can translate that into varying effects at different frequencies, and how...
CAT cable installation - NYC electrician recommendation
You might look for a contractor specializing in low-voltage wiring. They can be considerably less expensive than electricians. At least here in Portland, electricians don’t always have much experience with signal wiring. When my room was wired by a...
Subwoofer placement - does it matter?
Positioning is the *most* important thing in locating a sub. Then level matching, then phase adjustment.Simulators are great for giving you ideas. When I’ve used them, I’ve never had measured response in the room agree with the simulator. Maybe si...
Do caps stay "fully formed" even under minimal load? (SS)
Regardless of the answer, they will fail eventually.
Have you had any bad purchase experience(s) been with Audio websites and/or retailers?
I'm happy to say, so far I have not had such an experience with audio. I once bought a cellphone graded "new--other" on eBay; seller asked "What are you going to do about it?" in response to a missing part; and when I said "I'll have to leave bad ...
REL 12" Carbon vs JL Audio 12" Fathom
Ken, Everyone’s ears are different, but mine like realistically strong and even bass. I listen to lots of different stuff, including a good amount of orchestral classical music.I’ve been using a pair of JL Audio F112 for 15 years now, and I have n...
Streaming vs CD transport direct comparison
What conclusion can one reach? A group of audiophiles in a sighted test with a specific system in a specific room unanimously preferred a specific CD source to a specific Tidal source? That tells me very little, other than they probably were influ...
"Addition of subwoofer to Music System"
The essay by @erik_squires is well worth reading and is similar to my experience using subs for 15 years. It is possible to get lucky and have a sub integrate fine without a lot of trial and error, but that is the exception. The more general case ...
Best high-end headphones with noice cancellation ...
I like the Sonys. Fidelity will depend on what you're using them with. Android devices support LDAC, the bluetooth codec with highest data transfer rate. Apple devices do not, nor does Windows. But, the headphones can be used wired.

help me help my friend?
I have a pair of P3ESR myself (in my desktop system), so I understand why your friend doesn’t want to part with them. They are really nice speakers that sound great on most things. But I’ve never tried them in a room as large as 15 x 20 x high.I a...
Please suggest a really cheap SPDIF coaxial BNC cable for testing if my DAC is working
The cables don’t have to be labeled SPDIF. Any 75-ohm coaxial cable assemblies with the right connectors will be fine. The last time I looked, the least expensive ones were labeled as master clock cables. For example, this one!Just don’t tell your...
