Advice needed: am I going in the right direction?
You are welcome. Let us know what you purchase. I am following a bid on a HRT Music Streamer II on E-bay. Now it is under $20 (+$7 shipping).  Great way to bring computer audio to a budget system.
Budget hi-fi and vintage audio gear
At your budget, I would look for a Pioneer A-20 which may be bought new for $250. Also the Pioneer A35, its predecessor, might be found used for half that price.
Nuforce STA200
Again, I want to make it clear that I am not faulting this amp for it's quality. I like this amp!

Jl35, yes I agree with both your points, re power output and preamp use. My thing is that I buy an amp for the long haul, and using one in a way that it is not designed for (underpowered for the load presented) is not conducive toward that end.Jet...

Given your wishing to use a recording device, buy the Steinberg and see if it satisfies in your system. Seem to me it is very full function at it's price, not designed only as a  DAC. I would think a simple USB DAC would sound better for home audio.

Jl35, that is good to know. The speakers I own are rated higher than that, however do drop below 4ohms in the bass region. Phase angle at these frequencies is benign however. In what size room is your system?
Advice needed: am I going in the right direction?
If using USB out from computer and you want to keep it simple and inexpensive there are HRT Music Streamer DACs for sale on Ebay, actually one listed for $57($5 shipping) that would get you started. I have used these in several budget systems and ...

You are correct. Connect computer to DAC, DAC to amp, amp to speakers. Computer needs to recognize DAC, may need a driver depending on DAC and type computer.

My STA200 is also dead quiet. Have used it with two speakers of 6-8ohms, 87dB for limited hours as it is new  Might be a compatibility problem with your preamp. Does hiss get louder as you turn up volume? Usually a gain driven hiss problem becomes...
It’s that time of year- 2019 audio wish list
Always more music, and a speaker that can be bought for under a $1000 that doesn't drop below 6ohms and is truly 90db efficient (or at least close to these specs).Happy 2019!
In line Attenuators with Passive Preamps
Thanks George! Exactly my concern. I am certainly interested in the Lightspeed. Yes, a logarithmic approach is what is needed with the gain and sensitivity of the STA200.
In line Attenuators with Passive Preamps
Thanks George. I believe the SYS has a input impedance of 10K. In conjunction with the 51K input impedance of my Nuforce STA200, I have a combination having ~8.8K impedance. My source is a PS Audio Digital Link 111 DAC which has SS analog output. ...
Good starter speaker
Go to your dealer and listen to power amps and speakers in combination. What is budget for speakers?

George, Yes in the old days (1970) I had a Sansui AU 555 integrated at the heart of my system. 30wpc. Currently I use a BEL 1001MK5. 50wpc. Course the BEL is in a different league entirely in its ability to drive speakers. Mike

Jetter, Thanks. I was not familiar with the Copland pre. Looks to be a fine unit.  Aberyclark, Yes we need more info re the blown amp. So far no response to your previous post asking for clarification.
