Moving From AVR to Amp
Well, your Onkyo is clearly the weak link - both as a pre-amp and as an amp. I'd be inclined to drop the Onkyo and look for a decent pre/pro + power amp. Maybe a gently used Anthem, Classe, Cary or similar.Just adding a power amp to the Onkyo will...
DAC's, i'm lost
I have the Moon 100d ($599) and am very happy with it. The other I'd be looking at is the Wyred 4 Sound DAC-1 ($999), if I were to spend more. But as others have said, lots of choices.
How high the rears?
I believe 6 feet off the floor is about right. You're right, voice matching for rears is not that important. Even with DD and DTS rears still mainly serve as sound effects speakers.Ideally, the rears are placed further apart than the main LR speak...
Nearfield Upgrade?
Getting just the right sound requires some careful listening. Tough to do in a store. I just try to listen to the tweeter - very few are magical, most are just OK. But you must hear them for yourself. Good luck.
$2500 speaker threshold
My view is the really good stand mount monitor speakers sell for $2000 to $2500 new. Going to the same speaker in a floor stander doubles the price. Hence a big gap. Although I have no idea what his reasons were for suggesting that particular pric...
Which power amp?
I've owned the bryston 3bsst. It is a true powerhouse with an extremely powerful bottom end. I wouldn't describe it as bright or harsh at all. My problem was the bottom end was too powerful - I couldn't control it in my room. Bryston pre-amps - we...
Nearfield Upgrade?
I'm in the same boat. Work at home with the amp on my desk, speakers beside. Had Spendor S5e's which have a great midrange. Switched to an old pair of Aerial 5's. It's all in the tweeter when you are sitting close. I really like the Spendors, but ...
Budget Strategies forTightening up Bass?
Speaker cable and power cords. A good power cord will tighten things up - 'A LOT'.
For 75-85 dB a few watts are enough so ...
A more powerful amp tends to offer advantages at both low and higher volumes. You may have noticed with some amp/speaker combinations when you turn up the volume the overall sound improves -more open, detailed etc. With a more powerful amp, even a...
Am I on the right track for excellent sound?
Try the DAC on your CDP first, it will likely sound pretty good. If you are not happy you can consider an outboard DAC. I used the DAC on my old Linn Classik Music and it worked very well. Have since moved to an integrated with outboard DAC. Much ...
What would you do?
I've owned NHT's and they are OK, but not great. I've heard the focals (7 series and 8 series). Much better, especially the 8 series.I'm in a similar situation. What I did was find a used pair of Linn Katan's (not too difficult) and a Linn Trikan ...
Biwiring with separate cables for low and high end
If your mono amps have 2 sets of speaker outputs, why not use them. One set for the highs, one for the lows. I think that's what they are there for.
What would you do?
A good choice, the Focals are front ported buy rather large, especially the centre channel (will it fit?)At that price point for 5 speakers not sure there is much that will outperform them significantly. Since they will be on a shelf rear porting ...
Opinions on what to upgrade first; speakers or DAC
Upstream or downstream? Good arguments for both. Personally, I find it harder to choose a good pair of speakers I like - their 'personalities' vary so much, where upstream the variances seem less pronounced. For me, getting the right speakers make...
Solid state amp for Totem Model 1`s
I suggest an Exposure 3010s2 or Creek Destiny. Both offer over 100 wpc and a nice tight sound. I'm using the former with Aerial 5's, which are a tougher load than the totems.
