Which speakers have the biggest soundstage
One point to note that in addition to room size, the placement of the speakers in the room is another big factor that impacts soundstage. Most good speakers are capable of big soundstage I have found IF matched to the room and set up well. What var...
Reel to Reel decks
I know what you mean.I used to love to watch the VU meters jerk around to teh music back in the day when most tape units had VUs for playback as well as record. My Denon CD recorder has LED meters but it just ain't the same. Also my Roku Soundbridge...
Reel to Reel decks
a copy cannot be better than the original in a technical sense. It is just not possible. That does not mean a copy cannot sound subjectively better however. That is more a function of what one likes to hear.Copying often has a filtering effect on t...

Also, yes, good monitors (and also perhaps a good set of headphones) are often just what the doctor ordered for apartment dwellers.
What percentage of audiophiles use a sub ?
Tigger,I will just add that I do think adding a well matched powered sub or two to monitors is quite capable of doing it all well and often at considerably lower cost than most single box full range speakers combined with similar suited amplificat...

Is new better than old?
Ben,That's a good plan! Some companies provide upgrades to older models.OHM Acoustics http://www.ohmspeakers.com, for example, has been around over 30 years and provides modern driver upgrades for virtually every speaker they have ever made. Some o...

Too Many Tubes?
Old Armstrong stuff sound fantastic in my digital rig. Only three tubes in the signal path for digital in my system (the ARC sp16 pre-amp). There are 3 more (12AX7 I believe) tubes in the phono stage of the ARC pre-amp and that works quite well al...
What's the cost of an entry level vinyl setup?
I'm with THom and T_Bone.I have a vintage Dual 1264 with vintage Goldring cart and Yamaha cr-420 vintage receiver that sounds way more than just respectable. The same pieces bought used today should only cost a few hundred if you can find them.
