Good carts with SME V
Dear Ralph, Please clue me in; how do you adjust the effective mass on a Triplanar, save by the method common to any tonearm, which is to add mass? But, as for most other tonearms, you cannot reduce effective mass below the basic value with no add...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Halcro, As I recall there were back and forth arguments as to whether the TT81, like the TT101, had a coreless motor.  I thought that question was finally answered in the affirmative.  If so, are you saying that the coreless motor in the TT81 is n...
Dynavector cartridges, old and new
What I reject, is the notion that any cartridge that is no longer made, made with this or that exotic material in the cantilever, or has some unusual property or structure (magnet, coil, stylus shape) is therefore to be sought and probably sounds...

Chakster, sorry for autocorrect garbling your name.

Texter, doing what you suggested and then reporting on it sounds a lot like work. And I retired four months ago. I am loving every minute of retirement. However I may be curious enough myself to give it a shot. I was staring at my second DV505 ton...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
My advice would be to wait for one of the other guys to answer your question with some degree of certainty. Are you saying that you may replace the motor of a TT 101 with that from a TT81? Or what is it that you want to be “compatible”?

I’m still chewing on the idea that the automobile did not eliminate the horse industry. I say “chewing”, because during my recent visit to Tokyo, I noticed that horse meat was on the menu In at least one restaurant. Let’s be honest, the automobile...

Guys.  This must be an Eastern European thing.  I never ever heard of a Klipsch cartridge or a Zenn cartridge, either.  Of course, I have led a sheltered life on the East Coast of the US.  However, "MCZ" was the designation of a Grado cartridge mo...
Repair Linn turntable vs buying a different one
Rob, Your drawing an analogy to a vintage jaguar XKE is very apt. Because in some sense I get the feeling that those who cling to the Linn LP 12 over all others, at this point in history, are motivated by some of the same emotions that motivate pe...

He’s so legendary, that few of us have ever heard of him. Now that’s an exclusive. I would not have known that Paul Klipsch ever had anything to do with making cartridges.
Phono Preamp Recommendations
Thanks, Al. Most of those other features are common to the better tube phono stages that are available for sale, so I would have to agree that the excellence of the product must owe to Keith Herron's skills and care.  Some chicken soup is just bet...
Phono Preamp Recommendations
Al, Since you endorse it so strongly and repeatedly, I have no doubt that the Herron phono stage is truly excellent. All I can find out about the circuit is that it is headed by a 12AX7 input tube.  That by itself is not a standout feature. So, do...
Using Maple Butcher Block Under a Turntable
Just to be sure I made my point, I actually did do a comparison of Del Monte Sauer Kraut in small cans to their Mandarin Orange slices in water, in small cans.  I really chose the Orange slices because the ratio of water to solid is higher.  I als...
How much isopropanol is effective but safe for viny?
I don't remember what it was, but I think there was some question about using Photo-flo for cleaning LPs.  Anyway, something I read did cause me to stop using it about 10 or more years ago, in favor of Tween20 or Triton X100, or even Dawn.
How much isopropanol is effective but safe for viny?
I think I would limit the definition of a surfactant to a substance that reduces the surface tension of a liquid in which it is diluted, in this case of water.  This allows the water to be "wetter", to penetrate better.  Whether this also results ...
