Tonearms without anti-skate, damage to records?
dogberry, How do you know that you are setting AS to "half of VTF"? You can know the VTF in grams very precisely, but how do you know the AS force at the headshell, where the skating force is manifested? For me, that is where we are blinded unless...
Was I Expecting Too Much
Obviously, your request was perfectly reasonable.  I am going to guess that your dealer's salon is located in an area of a large major city and in a neighborhood where his walk-in customers are apt to be affluent.  In most parts of the US, which d...
What are the audio differences you hear with turntable Mats.
No_regrets, I probably shouldn’t have mentioned the L07D. In original form, the stainless steel mat was referred to by Kenwood as a “platter sheet”. It’s integral to the platter and constitutes a significant fraction of total platter mass. The dir...
If it sounds 'great', everything is ok?
I've not noticed that AS has much affect on the apparent L to R location of images on an LP, but I confess I never paid much attention to that when setting AS, because imaging is more about azimuth adjustment, in my mind.  No argument here.
If it sounds 'great', everything is ok?
Dear Elliott, I cannot find where you might have written about the amount of AS relative to VTF, and I do see where you described how you arrive at a suitable setting, using a grooveless area on vinyl. Your method as described would be unlikely to...
If it sounds 'great', everything is ok?
Just one teeny, weeny thing: Back up the thread, Elliott recommended to set AS to equal VTF or some high percentage of VTF.  With all respect to E, most agree that the AS force should be set to some small fraction of VTF.  In another concurrent th...
Vinyl static ionizers who's used them?
Lance, in your unit, does it have plates inside that you have to clean periodically?
Tonearms without anti-skate, damage to records?
Raul, I am very surprised by your opinion. I am also surprised that you have the hubris to suggest that my hearing R channel distortion in the absence of AS in my system is evidence that something is wrong with my ears or my system. Whereas theory...
If it sounds 'great', everything is ok?
Having over the decades occasionally found that I had been happily listening to a system that was later found to be out of whack in a major way, I would say the short answer to the OP is "no".  But some imperfections of set-up or function are OK t...
Tonearms without anti-skate, damage to records?
Let’s be clear on one issue: for all pivoted tonearms where the stylus overhangs the spindle, there IS a skating force at all times during play. So AS is not something you can choose not to believe in. The ways in which AS is created in different ...
Shelter 501 mk2 v mk3
Tennis, maybe when possible the VE data are accurate. But in many cases not, based on my own direct knowledge.
Shelter 501 mk2 v mk3
Beware of info on VE.  It's often based on hearsay.  In other words, the guys who put it there are about as informed as any of us is, in many cases.
Tonearms without anti-skate, damage to records?
Problem with magnetic: the magnitude of the force changes linearly with distance between the magnet and its ferrous target, as the tonearm rotates in the horizontal plane. But The skating force is not linear in the way its magnitude varies. In tha...
Shure Bulletin (written in 1954)
Putting a penny or nickel on the headshell was considered a tweak in those days, indicating you were in the presence of a real audiophile.
Tonearms without anti-skate, damage to records?
fsonic, Ordinarily, I would totally agree with you. You are very correct to ask for scientific evidence to support any of the claims made regarding audio as a hobby, especially vinyl. There are so many erroneous but commonly held beliefs that pers...
