for Bill Evans fan It's gotta be Waltz for Debby, with Sunday at the Village Vanguard a close second.
Klipsch La Scala Dilemma Take the LaScalas. Like Cliff, I haven't heard the Lores either, but I agree with his comments on the LaScalas - surely they will have just as much bass, and much more dynamic range (soft as well as loud).
Back to mono? Hi Viridian - a friend of mine has a single Klipschorn that he uses for mono listening, driven by an SET that puts out just 1/2 a watt (don't remember the make of the amp, sorry). It sounds fantastic. He also has a Garrard 301 that he uses with a ...
What started you on your audiophile journey . My father is a professional musician, so I had a love of music from a very early age. I could sing the opening of Chabrier's EspaƱa (the Mercury LP of the DSO and Paray) on pitch before my dad put the needle down when I was three years old. I alwa...
Where does your user name come from? I sincerely hope that there is not a single person on this site who can't figure out where my username comes from....
Cleaning and Maintenance of Connections..... I use the Deoxit every six months, and it makes a huge difference, as you say, though I have never experienced the sound being abrasive afterwards. I have never tried cleaning the actual outlet, though, in fact I have never gone so far as to clean...
Wagner? Solti is one of the best Wagner conductors, and the recordings also sound great. Another great Tristan is Kleiber's. Knappertsbusch has a good Parsifal as well.
What is Warmth? Hi Tom - while you are correct that warmth, when describing timbre, can be very subjective, there are huge differences between different instruments, and players of the same instruments. A flugelhorn, for instance, is most certainly a warmer timbr...
Thoughts on current EL-34 tubes I would agree with Rich - I also am currently using the EH EL34's in my PrimaLuna amp, and they sounded better than both the stock tubes and the current issue Mullards that I tried.
Great films where music is a central theme. To the Christopher Guest mockumentary list, I would add Waiting for Guffman, which is about musical theater. Very hilarious, especially if you have any experience in actually performing. It is probably most musicians favorite of all of his, even a...
Does anyone "throw away" Lp's ? I've never actually thrown away an LP unless it was truly unplayable. Otherwise, I take them to the places suggested above.
Recommend Verdi's Nabucco/Va pensiero Frogman's suggestions are excellent - another good recording of several different Verdi choruses on the same album is one conducted by Claudio Abbado with the La Scala orchestra and chorus, on the DG label.
Help me identify music. I agree, it's almost certainly a film score. Don't know which one, though.
Dallas Texas High End? Definitely check out Audio Concepts. Ask for Bryon, he is the most knowledgeable salesperson in there. And it has indeed been many years since Hillcrest HiFi was very good, audio-wise. They are mostly home theater now, though they may still have s...
Amp more important than speakers? I agree with Mofimadness and Elizabeth - once again, if you don't like the sound of your speakers, you won't like the sound of your system. It really is that simple, folks. This is of course not to say that the rest is unimportant, the amp must be... |
