Christmas Music and Audiophiles?
Haven't read the other responses, so sorry if this is a repeat, but there is a nice CD compilation from Blue Note called Yule Struttin' Christmas.
Which is more accurate: digital or vinyl?
Atmasphere - thank you, thank you, thank you. Most people can indeed hear digital artifacts just fine, when they have a decent analog system to compare it with. Many musicians like myself have been trying in vain to convince people of what you are...
Which is more accurate: digital or vinyl?
Nice post, Frogman. I would agree wholeheartedly. I am also thinking that the phenomena you describe are also a good answer to a question that has been discussed on this forum quite a bit lately, namely what is PRAT? Too many audiophiles think abo...
Best AV receiver if I also want very good music?
The Marantz is a good choice, I also know that in the past, Harmon Kardon made some very good sounding ones, I used to use one. Don't know about their current production, though.
Best single-malt Scotch...
Lloydelee21, have you ever tried Laphroig? Lagavulin next door is also one of my faves.
Why not horns?
Gotta love Altecs!
Do you use variable speed on your turntable?
To add to Halcro's post - most American orchestras are actually playing at 442, many of them stating this to their applicants when they have openings. The San Francisco Symphony and the Pittsburgh Symphony are two current examples. In Europe, the ...
Recordings with BASS
This depends on what you want to test about the bass. If you are looking for how well your system reproduces the sound of live, acoustic bass-register instruments, then a great thing to use is the opening of Wagner's opera, Das Rheingold.
Live Performances Gone Awry
Kbarkamian, you are most definitely correct. I have known personally several orchestral musicians who were fired for drug or alcohol abuse.
Live Performances Gone Awry
There are so many instances of classical music disaster stories. I have a great many of them myself. One of the funniest ones involves a trombone player who did not realize that the overture, which he did not play on, was very short, and he went d...
I didn’t know that Did you guys know that?
This is pretty much always the case when I have done it. I believe it is still a mystery why this is, but it does indeed seem to be true.
The Evolution of Modern Jazz
Wow, I just now saw this thread - it was started in August when I was temporarily without internet, I see. Great thread, guys, there are several things here I will have to check out. Someone mentioned Jean Luc Ponty earlier - I went to school with...
My audiophile take on the symphony last night.
Mapman wrote: "I think I could very well fail to identify live versus recorded consistently." I sincerely hope you do not actually believe this statement, no matter what the circumstances. I would submit that there is no way anyone should ever fai...
My audiophile take on the symphony last night.
As soon as I read the op, I was going to scroll down and post. Then I noticed Frogman already had. What he said.
Strange Klipsch thing
I agree with Mrdecibel - I have a pair of Cornwalls, and even against the wall, I have excellent soundstaging. The bass is also quite a bit better when they are against the wall as opposed to out from it a little. Unfortunately, in my room I am un...
