Upgrade my CD player or futile effort?
As Yakbob has stated clearly, and others have said, you have a huge imbalance in your digital vs analog. Who do you think a $500 mediocre even at that CDP will compare with your TT costing > 10X that? I mean digital can be great, BTU its not ma...
Are all amps being built wrong?
Mainly because speakers are designed to be driven by a low impedance voltage source.Aside from what i already wrote, here's also the practical issue.  A low impedance, hgih current amp will drive anything.  Others might (might) sing with speaker A...
Are all amps being built wrong?
re: Vandersteen's being hard to drive.I had 2Cs and then 2Cis and 2Ces.  They were the easiest, least fussy speakers to drive i ever owned.  Drive them with a 20 W NAD 3020 that could NOT drive Spica TC or SC-50s.  Drove them with a pair of tiny L...
Are all amps being built wrong?
Erik-just for clarity - I was not disagreeing with you, just adding and referencing what you said rather than blather on and being repetitive :-)
Are all amps being built wrong?
My answer to the original posed question is "not at all, not even close"I think Eric contributed some good stuff above. As am amp designer, i think they ought to be voltage sources, with low output impedance.  Now, for the record mine are not zero,...
Are you also leaving free (virtually) performance on the table?
It was then that Mike asked me, how long has it been since I'd cleaned the terminals in my system?HmmmmBingo.  In fact all that is often needed is to disconnect and reconnect (unplug/replug) most wiping contacts such as RCAs and bananas.  Screw do...
Critical listening and altered states
As someone who's critical listening must be as consistent as possible for business purposes (i do some contract designs, mostly as a hobby) variables must be avoided. So if you listen to A in an altered state, ensure that B is in the identical alt...
Streamer vs. new mac mini for 2 channel system
Who says the mac mini is not the best transport? Not me. Many have noted that when you compare power supply noise in major PC platforms Apple is tops for audio, and supports the full HD USB profiles.Paul McGowan, who sells a transport, uses one at...
60 Hz Hum from Powered Sub
Spacecadet3;moving it around to rule out ground loops is nonsensical.  ground loops will occur whenever there are two different paths to ground. By moving it you guaranty a different path!Every single solitary component in your sonic chain must b ...
A 60 year old turntable design is still going strong!
Hah! I feel better now. From the first review i could find (have not yet foudn the origin live site....hmm):quote:"Before we get to the thing itself, let me tell you what this product is not.  It’s not a Weight. It’s not a Record Weight. It’s not ...
A 60 year old turntable design is still going strong!
Thank you MillerCarbon.I stand (well, sit) corrected.  I'll look this gizmo, up but it must be a damper?  Clearly it does address my concerns about adding weight on a suspended turntable.  Funny that they use gravity int he name but its not a weig...
PrimaLuna Evo 200 underwhelming
holmz- Vandy 2Cs are one of the easiest speaker loads to drive.  back in the day i driven them with a < 20 w integrated amp very nicely.
So I just bought a Hegel H390 and
@jjss gave a good framework. My two cents is that asking "what matches to the hegel?" is the wrong question.  Any really good amp ought to work well with a wide variety of speakers.  what you really need to ask is "what speakers do I like?"; what s...
A 60 year old turntable design is still going strong!
MC - you are saying just use a record weight correct?  Yes that's one way to hold them down. Keep in mind that with suspended tables (old school) a lot of weight becomes both a load and balancing issue though. This is an AR thread after all :-)

and to that i need to fix Edgar's (Villchur) name....
