Vote Your Ranking -If you have an opinion on this digital subject
Oh, to answer:   if all is done just righht   1. Gidal/Qobuz HD 2. Ripped Red Book 3. Red Book on CDP or transport Not sufficient data on super high res files, and many demand mainstream while i work with R2R DAC technology primarily.  So n...
Vote Your Ranking -If you have an opinion on this digital subject
@chorus A simple ranking is meaningless without a lot of caveats.  For example, what CD transport player and what tech is employed ot make it sound good? If ripped and played from a computer, what is done to isolate THAT, and what is the path?  Y...
Bought powerful/expensive Amp+Speakers but plan to use an old preamp , am I crazy?
No issues at all.
McIntosh -- good for show, not for sound, says dealer
Blanket statements pro and con miss more relevant points, such as "not all Mc is created equal". Their legacy tube designs are beautifully made, and typically warm (someone said "wet blanket") :-)  Its rarely state of the art, but it is solid, bac...
Digital Audio Output Differences? Is USB Audio Really The Top-notch?
You are asking a seemingly simple question in a complex field.   yes, USB >> SPDIF (or its kissin' cousin, AES) - but only if its is implemented correctly.  Or if the SPDIF is crummy (usually true) or.... So while i would begin with USB, ...
XLR question for bass
If it does, it has little to nothing to do with being XLR. Maybe some cables will be slightly better. But for the most part - no. Furthermore, most (too many) balance XLR interfaces on consumer gear are really just balanced-to-unbalanced adapters...
Do I really need an " Audio Grade Network Switch "?
no you do not. And yes, i have listened, jsut to be open minded. Note the argument is stringer than some data above would suggest. For the most part it does nto matter if the jitter is the same or not between costly and cheap-o hubs, because THAT...
Phono stage and preamp overload
Upon further thought, I may be wrong. In a full function preamplifier (phono and line inputs) the line level inputs connect to the attenuators. So depending upon the type of attenuator, there would be an effect on overload. Sorry. For phono, the ...
What went bang, smelled of "I'm fried", yet left it in working order...???
if you can find the culprit (it ought to be visible) and can get a schematic, i will take a quick look and if i can figure it ouy, tell you my opinion.   I get it, i just know most people are flummoxed w/r/t the how and why - and by people i mea...
What went bang, smelled of "I'm fried", yet left it in working order...???
you have the likely culprits. MOV, capacitor, possibly the safety cap.   So the next question is "why?", "what did it do?" and ho to replace. Obviously the repair is influenced by why a cap failed. There are cues for anyone who knows the design ...
Advice needed on power cables, wall warts, conditioning, electrical outlet
Toroidal transformers are the worst for amplifier power supply. IMO, nonsense. They contain the magnetic field more predictably, have a higher efficiency, lower weight, or, conversely deliver more power (better regulation). If well designed (ke...
Phono stage and preamp overload
It sounds like you have solid info above ( a rarity!) In general, people struggle with too little photo stage gain, especially from low output moving coils where the max may be something like 1/2 mV, rather than too much. In the good old days, m...
Advice needed on power cables, wall warts, conditioning, electrical outlet
Well, Paul is correct. But he needs to continue: its the job of the amp’s (or preamp’s, but that’s less current-demanding) power supply to deliver that power. Regulation of the DC rails can eliminate this issue - if and only if there is sufficient...
Advice needed on power cables, wall warts, conditioning, electrical outlet
i would first start with having dedicated outlets installed.....and then see if the power conditioner is really needed or not.   from there, you can experiment with power cords to see if they make a difference or not. he said he does
Advice needed on power cables, wall warts, conditioning, electrical outlet
First - good powering and grounding is very important and your basic approach is solid. A filter matters ( i have no opinion on that particular brand and made my own which is awesome) and a single place where they are all grounded to ( a big, good...
