Killer vintage 70's, 80's reel to reel to add to my setup.
No true audiophile system is complete without a good reel to reel deck. Even if only to make recordings off your vinyl for background listening. There is nothing like tape. I would get Studer A807 or 810, find a qualified technician to make it so...
Do you consider cables to be a "component" of your system?
Of course, they are components, and very important ones. Speaking of preamp and amp, I would first upgrade power cords and then the interconnects in between them. In other words, first improve power supplies and then do the link. If buying used, ...
What Speakers are you running with your Gryphon Amp?
You might consider Gryphon speakers, of course.
cassettes CAN sound better than vinyl.
So, I got the Panasonic AG-7350 SVHS VCR and tried to record. To begin with, I decided to use my Nak 682ZX deck as a source not Nottingham turntable. Maxell Vertex cassette in the Nak and TDK XP Super Pro SVHS tape in the Panasonic. Was listening ...
cassettes CAN sound better than vinyl.
Tape is still the very best medium but it is not any tape in any cassette deck, it is in higher end RTR decks. That said, and I use customized and aligned Nak 682ZX with Maxell Vertex tapes, it can and does sound real good. Biggest disappointment ...
so, i recorded a type 1, normal bias, on a 70s cassette deck, and it sounds FANTASTIC
This is a gross exaggeration. It might sound ok at best. If you want excellent that will be different tape, and if you want fantastic - that will be better reel to reel deck.Pre-recorded tapes sound inadequate but sometimes are listenable.
Is great sound possible through an on-board, MM phono stage?
Depends on your definition of "great", doesn't it ? In my world, the answer to your question is closer to a no than to a yes. In other words, you could give it a try.
Age of masters
Yeah, either pro JVC or Panasonic. I know, some people do it.
what is the best cassette tape maker in your experience?
Yes, TDK MA-XG green is the best TDK and second best cassette ever available. The very best is Maxell Metal Vertex. Both for Nakamichi and Tandberg decks.
Age of masters
Anyone used pro SVHS VCR and SVHS tapes for audio only recordings, anyway ?chakster, did you get a cassette deck ?
The stereo sounds fine, music is great, but Jeff Bezos came back to earth.
Maybe we should go too. And never return. This planet is on unstoppable fire.
RIP Rick Laird
stuartk, just one album - Visions Of The Emerald Beyond. It is almost like one composition.
Jazz for aficionados
Orpheus10, agreed. But I do like quite a number of what you post when it is not jazz, at least not traditional jazz.
Jazz for aficionados
Orpheus10, that's fine with me. I used to like 'classical' jazz, but that was a long time ago. I still enjoy some compositions, not many.As for classical music, well, that's different, though McLaughlin says that in his view there are no barriers....
RIP Rick Laird
At their best Mahavishnu Orchestra were incomparable. This is the second Mahavishnu line-up, Rick wasn’t there but he might want to listen to it now..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owIXQz5AQv0&ab_channel=andrenavarroII
