Why so negative about McIntosh speakers?
I'm not a fan of their speakers either. There's a ton of others that I feel the same way about it.Its hard for a company to specialize in everything.Mac tries to.They are best known for their amps, and vintage tuners. Now they claim to make everythin...
no low end st70
I'm not familiar with the Triode mod. But if you haven't already tried the "SED" EL34's,those have a nice warm characteristic.Other people may be more familiar with the Triode mod to see if it has that characteristic.
Tube vs. Solid State Rectifier
Be careful trying out of those SS adapters. It will give a higher B+ voltage on the tubes, transformers, and caps/etc. These parts can be damaged. Those adapters don't have any voltage correction for different rectifier tube types. It can be risky.
Line voltage is 116 not 120 why?
The standard is 120V nominal + or -5%. In other words it can vary from 114V to 126V. I would love to have 116 in winter,I have 125V most of the time unless its hot summer with a lot of air conditioning going. Most of your lights and other stuff wil...
Tube vs. Solid State Rectifier
Also if you are new to tube amps, you may get by with solid state on a 300B,although I thought they leaned toward tube rectification.Mostly when you spend a lot of time with triode amps, you may end up with a tube rectifier in the long run to get mo...
Tube vs. Solid State Rectifier
If your looking for punch and impact in the bass, solid state rectifiers may do.But if you like all the excellent highs, mid range and good bass that you could listen to all day,it usually takes tube rectification. Tube rectifiers give you all the p...
JBL L series....early 90s...L-3,5,7
Also, check the foam surrounds.I think JBL uses foam if I remember right.
2 DACs: 1 best for movies, 1 best for audio, why?
Maybe the music is 16 bit,and the video is 24 bit.One DAC might get along with one better(16bit),while the other might get along with the 24bit better? Just guessing.
JBL L series....early 90s...L-3,5,7
If I'm thinking of the correct ones I may not have payed that much attention to the L5's.The L3 was a bookshelf 2 way with JBL's titanium tweeter. The L7 was like the L5 with a extra woofer somewhere, side maybe. Those both sounded pretty decent bac...
Making the best of mediocre speakers
Why not try conventional speakers with wall mounted brackets.
Power Cables which take the soundstage back
I was going to do the same. Then it got cool outside.I thought about it,then realized that I just can't relish the thought of that thing slithering into our bed to warm up at night!
How to connect Phono Stage from vintage receiver

Esoteric X-01 power cord
After trying several different cords, you may wear out that anti-corrosive plating on your contacts. Then the corrosion will start creating a problem you never had before. You may end up worse of.
