Conrad Johnson--Best used Model
Frozen tundra  I am a cj PV-12L owner.  When reading your 1st post, you mentioned the lush house cj sound without being plodding.  The PV-5 fits your description but has the overly bulbous bass of that era's cj sound.  The PV-11 that preceded my m...
Cable Controversy
@dave_b When you mention "flexible designs" can we assume you have owned a variety of cables over time all manufactured my MIT?
help a Die hard ANALOG guy choose a budget CDP
fossda mentions three companies known for their high value to price ratio. IMHO, the Marantz would be the most analog sounding not just for the linearity of its frequency response and smooth texture but also for the dynamics that so many digiphobe...
Cable Controversy
@psag   I would encourage you to rethink your last post.  Look at manufacturer's systems that they set up at audio expos...they use the same gear from show to show and that does include cables.  From their own extensive research they have assemble...
Cable Controversy
@devilboy  If you are advocating a double blind cable test of, let's say interconnects in YOUR system where you, the listener get to judge what sounds best to you in your system and setting, then I am all in with ya.  As many people have been quic...
help a Die hard ANALOG guy choose a budget CDP
@fjn04  I'm responding because of the  heading "die hard analog guy".  I am enchanted by the sound of LPs as well.  I had been using a $1600 Arcam CD player but found myself suffering from listening fatigue on a regular basis.  I started reading a...
Recommendation for Improvement over McCormack DNA-225
After re-reading my previous post on this issue, I want to amend.  I mentioned "harshness" in the treble.  I should have said an "over-emphasis" in the treble with the stock DNA-1 amp.  Steve's circuit modifications evened out the frequency balanc...
Cable Controversy
Here comes another old, classic debate...to double-blind or not double-blind?  No sarcasm randy-11.
Recommendation for Improvement over McCormack DNA-225
If you already have a dedicated line and a PS Audio outlet, I would talk to your tech guy about upgrading your amp.  It's amazing what thoughtful circuit modifications can do for the purity of your amp's sound.
Recommendation for Improvement over McCormack DNA-225
@dwolek  I have a DNA-1 Deluxe in my system.  I too thought it a bit harsh in the high end and contacted Steve McCormack at SMc Audio about having it modified.  That was quite a few years ago and I am listening to music through it as I type this m...
Marantz and Stereophile?
I have an SA-8005 SACD player.  It is made in Japan.  The heft and build quality, not to mention the sound quality is amazing!
Cable Controversy
@andrei_nzregarding your 4 points.... 1) yes  2) yes...if the purity of the conductors is comparable and both employ the same type dielectric.  3) yes...only if , as you said, the DIYer knows what they're doing  4) don't disagree, but... the "magi...
Cable Controversy
@jafant   My system is listed here on AGON.
Cable Controversy
@devilboy  - This conversation takes me back to the "original" audio press argument over whether or not something called "The Absolute Sound" existed.  Back when Harry Pearson was at the helm of TAS he asserted that "the absolute sound" of a music...
Cable Controversy
So devilboy... according to your position there is no faithful reproduction of music.  It will be colored by the very microphone and microphone cables as it is recorded.  No argument about that from me.  My point is all we can do in this endeavor ...
