How can power cords make a difference?
Personal experience leads me to conclude that ALL components, including conductors (PC & others) contribute a sonic signature. We could say that we all wish the system's sonic result should exceed the sum of the parts. IMO PCs fall into the sa...
RPG Skyline mounting on ceiling
Thanks, Bob. You could temporarily try absorbant matl in the corner behind or on the side wall next & slightly behind the speaker. For the corner, try covering ceiling to floor, if you can. If this helps, you can then look for the appropriatel...
Best 2 ch. speaker placement algorithm.
Following the above posts, all I can contribute is a difficult mono voice recording: Schubert, "Winterreise" by Hans Hotter (CD, Gramophono 2000 AB 78725). Average (to say the least) recording, remastered in Cedar whatever. Hotter has a very expre...
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
In a recent post, Detlof mentioned that he tailored his system to "his ears", i.e. the kind of sound reproduction HE likes. I subscribe to this view and, thereby, my opinion on equip is tainted with my preferences in musical reproduction. Cables a...
Redwiki - About racks, shelves...
Oh, yes: the components. All on the heavy side (12-25 kgs) each, one comp. per shelf. Power supplies (3) not on rack.Sorry.
Redwiki - About racks, shelves...
Thank you, Redkiwi, for offering yr invaluable insight. I can easily get solid fishing wire and nylon. Assuming that the resonance frequency of the whole thing is the tricky part, the metal wire probably vibrates like an instrument string, making ...
Help ID nakamichi tape deck
Kubla, "I don't even HAVE tapes..." you're inimitable, LOL!Cheers!
Is 500 hours of break in really nec.?
Don't (feel guilty). Most components and wires seem to be happier when playing music rather than when silent, IMO. Particularly so when said items are new on the job (i.e., allow for induction period). Items display happines through better sound. ...
Dielectric?
Not quite on topic, but similar vein: where can we get good dielectric? Anyone know? Recently I stripped a mega$ pc, thick & appropriately heavy, to find it was filled with minuscule lead-shot and wire+insulation in the middle. The lot secured...
How can power cords make a difference?
Mmccoy, an inexpensive test worked for me: buy a piece of heavy gauge double insulation cord (flexible, of a kind used in industrial applications) an IEC and a wall plug. Make a pc out of it (you may connect the shielding on the wall socket end an...
Redwiki - About racks, shelves...
Thank you, Redkiwi. I assume Neuance is the current way to go. In cheapo mode however, other than corian (txs, again, kiwi) any experience with Maplewood or similar? I am thinking of building a custom rack where each shelf will be individually sus...
How to by amp or bridge Amps
For bi-amping, www.sound.au.com/bi-amp.htm could help. For bridging, I strongly advise against personal intervention; ask the manufacturer as suggested above. Good luck!
Reviewing the Reviewers
Detlof notes: "I've built a system just following my own ears and trying to voice and shape it in the way I *wanted it to sound*"(my emphasis). Which begs the question: HOW does each one of us like music reproduction? Laid back? Bass articulate? D...
Classical Music Review
Orch./M. Sargent. 10/5I rate Schnabel's playing over Backhaus in these concerti for the passion & the outstanding technique that allows this passion to be heard. M Sargent's direction is dynamic and involved -- sometimes (4th concerto) I get t...
Classical Music Review
P. Orch./H. Schmidt-Isserstedt. 10,8I find both Backhaus (crystal clear toucher, esp. left hand)and the orchestra under Isserstedt in excellent symbiosis here; the result sounds well beyond the "sum of the parts". A very good reference -- or even ...
