Can anybody define LOW OUTPUT...?
using an overly sensitive phono stage would CONSIDERABLY change what I'll call the 'electrical profile' of the signal Well, amplifying a very small signal is always prone to external attack (noise, etc). Also, in a smaller signal you're more depen...
Step-up transformers...
Most definitely a tranny. The K&K kit looks good (if you know how to diy the PS, etc).Bent uses S&B trannies which are very good.BTW, so are the Lundahl used in the K&K kit.
Looking for views on bi-amping
You're talking about passive bi-amping, right? The extra power will result in some benefits (see above) but is very expensive for what you get.Using an active x-over before the amps (Active biampng) or a passive one, offers much great benefits.
About Lugnut -- Patrick Malone
God Bless you for your strength, Patrick. From across the Atlantic (the "old" world) I will be thinking of you, and sharing with you, vinyl sounds... and prayers.Merry Xmas, Patrick -- and may you greet the New Year with a big smile!
"High Current"
With all due respect to all, what Sean is saying is hardly revolutionary -- and thereby, hardly controversial. All he's describing is an amp where the manufacturer is (truthfully) saying: "this amp is stable down to 2ohms and I guarantee that at t...
Please explain in simple terms...brightness
Try this list of terms for reference. As you'll see, brightness is usully associated with a rise in amplitude resonse in the mid-high region.Cheers

Kevziek -- nothing will last indefinitely. If you don't do something about this (i.e. help them NOT last indefinitely), your local power supply co will help you out with peaks, sparks, junk, etc.
YBA Passion 1000 mono, which preamp to match?
Unusually perhaps, the CAT Ultimate (or Sig III) provides an excellent interface b/ween source & Passion mono.Pls note that my experience is with the Signature+ passion combo; however, people who have upgraded fm sig to ultimate seem to prefer...
B&W Matrix 800
Keep your present power amplification and look up actively bi-amping the spkrs (see Richard above). If I remember correctly, Northcreekmusic offered some such service. Better still, just communicate with Drrdiamond! Please don't bother about the pr...
Speaker Choice for a larger room
I am familiar with all your choices. Given your stated sonic preferences ("what I want from my system") you have virtually chosen Soundlabs. Next would come Amati (not Cremona -- it lacks extension vs the others), or Avantgarde, then Aerial & ...
Pass XA 160 review:life span is 6 years?
Caps have a limited life/ performance expectancy. Change the caps & you're set for another 5-6 yrs.The performance is usually spec'd in hours of operation. However in powering up/down, components do get a small beating...
How low can one hear Huh?? Say again
In order to "hear" 30Hz etc sound, you have to allow for the wave length: ~38'. Usually we FEEL the direct sound of 30Hz and we hear the reflected sound (i.e. somewhat later than it occurs). As to the reviewer, I couldn't say. 30Hz is not that low,...
"High Current"
Sean, IS it possible to manufacture an amp for home use that doubles down at clipping to, say, 2ohms??I'm not sure, but i think it's theoretically very dificult?Cheers
Component that stopped the upgrade cycle cold?
Simon Yorke TT from 1988. Still up & still runnig, same motor, arm. I *should* send it to Mr Yorke for servicing/ maintenance (it's free for Yorke TTs) but haven't got down to it...
Who will survive? One last table til I die.
Tom mentions...a device that specs worse...I agree. Esepcially considering how the relevant spec is measured: sine waves.Hardly conclusive regarding complex signals like music!
