Mahler 5
Actually Bernstein's live 9th is one of the best performances of this piece. IMO, etc.
"Polyamping" A Look to the Future or Fancy Fad?
Interesting, Kpinneo. Thanks for the info.
Subwoofer X/O frequency experiments
Onhwy61: absolutely. But that's related to our ears' sensitivity curve (the Fletcher/Munson "phon" curve). You would typically lower the volume on the sub at higher levels.
Wife approval factor?
Sean interpolates: how much are used shoes and purses worth in comparison to used electronics More importantly, can you tweak or modd shoes to improve performance???BTW, things DO change due to the "living together --> married" transition. I we...
Subwoofer X/O frequency experiments
...advice/solutions to achieving PERFECT balance of low frequency that does not requre constant adjustment? (my emphasis) Haven't found any:( As Eldartford, above, I found that 120-130Hz on classical (+0/-1 octave, LR 24 or Bessel) is the easiest ...
Speakers for vocalists
El -- good point! Problem, as always, is determining the right x-over frequency from one cord to the other. Indeed, recent studies have shown that these differ from one human to another -- hence making the choice of spkrs x-over frequencies a very...
Good $1K amp with records?
IMO a used Krell "50" would be better (slightly warmer) than a Bryston. However, the rated wattage is lower (~50W). You'll also have think about changing the electrolytics in an old amp -- that's another 150-200. Not a bad deal, overall.
Best Upgrade?
...my room is (...) is full of glass windows. It sounds like there's not a whole "damnation" of a lot you can do about room treatment (heavy velvet curtains @ 1st reflection points??? Even that might only work over ~5kHz or so).Rather than strain t...
Best DIY SET int/power amp?
If you're experienced check out designs at D.Douma's site, diyaudio & here & duncan & the diy listings.Otherwise, do go for a kit -- some good ones at diyhifisupply & bottlehead (many others available too). Cheers

I am taking great pains to isolate the Seas midrangeFrom what are you isolating the mid?Interesting about the baffle resonances. How are you thinking of doing this (bitumen sheets or...)? Cheers

Another vote for products sporting a FR driver (or "wide range" to be more precise). One driver will cover the voice range; nothing worse than an iffy xover right in the middle of the tenor's ocal range...An unusual product that might tickle yr fa...
Will a more resolving CDP improve my system?
I secnd Metralla's advice. Play the quiet piece WITH a pre FIRST and check out how long the low volume lasts. If you do not have Bolero, find another piece of music that increases in volume very gradually.
Using external crossvover enclosure for amp stand?
Tom -- it's a *good* idea to use copper sheet for the x-over.As to twising, I average ~1" & run the wire away from the magnets. Cheers
Using external crossvover enclosure for amp stand?
Are you proposing to move the x-vers BEFORE the amps?? If so, you'll need to change the whole set-up (and you'll need more amps/channel).If you're thinking of simply pulling the existing x-over out of the spkr box -- no problem, as long as you kee...
Single vs Multiple driver loudspeakers...
I readily subscribe to El's opinion, It just isn't fair to force an excellent midrange driver to perform woofer and tweeter duty and would add, it's not necessary, either. The average Lowther, Supravox, Diatone, AER, etc will get you through the d...
