Help, which preamp to buy from my shortlist?
For the price EAR 864 is a versatile pre-amp with very good phono stage, tape capable, ample inputs.  Tube rolling is preferred with NOS 12AX7s (1 12AU7) tubes (but only 5 total) easily obtainable.  It's my back-up pre-amp I purchased in 2005.  Ph...
RCA interconnect recommendation
@louis - Yes High Fidelity cables are a "killer" of sound. The worst sounding cables I’ve ever heard including a $750,000 system whose owner immediately upon hearing GroverHuffman.com cables, purchased them at 5% of the high end High Fidelity cabl...
Does Time alignment and Phase coherency make for a better loudspeaker?
mijostyn  Right you are!  My custom built listening room has highly damped side walls and ceiling with all 3/4" cherry plywood walls (besides the SR HFTs & internal wall bass traps of activated charcoal chambers, etc.) and is only 19' X 15' X ...
Better CD Sound: The Search
@jafant - Checked and oops!  My Sony is the 707ESD not the 777ESD.  The 777 is a later version without the full set of features.  Sorry.
Better CD Sound: The Search
The last Sony I had, used as a transport was the 777ESD. While full sounding, it also was very dark, lacked ambiance and detail.  Great remote too and full featured!   Used as a CDP, yuk! Could be the old caps and the power cord (but the Kyocera u...
Better CD Sound: The Search
@jafant The Kyocera 310.  I've owned/heard over 50+ CDPs from the 80's 90's and 2000's (Denon 1500 was okay).  I also owned a Cal Audio Tercet III and Muse Signature 9.  The were vastly inferior with the Muse sounding awful replaced by a Marantz 6...
Does Time alignment and Phase coherency make for a better loudspeaker?
@rooze  I wonder if the Evolution Acoustics MM3s which have a family resemblence to Dunlavy Vs have similar time alignment.  Does anyone know?   Despite the truly great sound emanating from Dunlavy's, I cannot tolerate single point/seat listenin...

@charles1dad My friend/neighbor has a high end system. He has 3,000 CDs and only plays them after ripping them using EAC to a thumbdrive. Then it goes to a Berkeley, then a Meridian UltraDAC, then an Audio Research SP28, then the amp/speaker. He c...
Have you moved away from full range to standmount speakers + subs?
The best soundstaging I have heard have been Carver Amazing Speakers (latest version for mids/highs) and Von Schweikert Ultra 11s.   I have noticed that soundstaging from small speakers maybe easier to obtain as placement is easier.  Also, the les...
Isolation Feet Recommendation for Equipment Rack
I use steel spikes under my two racks into a 12" thick, 3000 psi steel reinforced concrete slab.   Nothing from the ground goes up into my racks.   However, the racks are welded steel with 50/50 mix of sand/shot.  They are relatively damped before...
What were the radio stations of your youth that helped you on your music/audio journey?
KFAC, KUSC and KCSN (classical and jazz)
Analogue from Digital
@mikelavigne  I agree.  I have 28,700 LPs/7,000 CDs/7,000 78s.  I stopped purchasing jazz LPs (so many great but expensive recordings) and substituted CD versions.  So many are absolutely wonderful.  I have good quality audio gear and a great room...
Hardy cartridge
@fstein - For the past 10+ years, I have been using a magic eraser to clean my stylus after every side.  Back to front although many say just up and down, gently for a Benz Ruby3.  Otherwise, I would recommend non-moving coil cartridges for you.  ...
The Most Cost Effective Tweak
@herman @gita   Yes, I agree that "perfection" in placement is the objective but how to limit the effort required.  The laser measuring device used by real estate appraisers is one method other than string or measuring tape.  I have 190 lb. speake...
Fuses
Oregonpapa's forum is closed so I am contributing here.   In my system, the SR blue fuses and outlets sound warm and inviting.  I tried an SR orange fuse and found it to be more open, possibly more dynamic but stuck with the blue.   The black fuse...
