Which material sounds better for speakers construction? Wood, Ply or MDF?
+1 peter.I've wanted to play with composite sandwiches, as well as using layers of the same materials with different cut-outs to prevent panel length resonances.
Beware the audio guru
Well, you know how it is. If you can’t fart in a crowded elevator and observe the pained attempts at normalcy, then what fun would life be? A real fartist acts, and leaves, knowing death will be upon his victims in less than three floors.

@mr_m I was making a joke on GaAs - Gallium Arsenide transistors, made with the elements gallium and arsenic, which are a real thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallium_arsenideBest,Erik

Can an atheist blaspheme, if there’s no God in their universe? Just asking(no one else is staying on topic either.....well- not everyone, to avoid absolutes, that is)! Technically, yes. Blasphemy isn't about what you believe, but what you say o...

Gallium Cyanide transistors??? Sounds dangerous.... Go big or go home. So long as I keep them contained in a magnetic time field they are perfectly safe. :) Best,E
What Matters and What is Nonsense
Room acoustics Uber Alles. A good room can make a wide range of speakers sound excellent. A poor room will severely limit you, and force your hand. DSP is great, but it's benefits are magnified with good room acoustics. Most pros I know, recommend...

I think it's close between ply and MDF. Construction matters however. The best MDF I have seen use 1" thick layers to build up the case, with each layer using a different bracing topology. This yields an incredibly stiff and inert cabinet. but is v...

@mapman It’s true! Fixing new problems like ground loops, bad drivers, "does my amp need to be repaired" or "why is my remote not working" type of questions all benefit from those who have gone before. I think the idea of a "guru" in this thread a...
Anyone know where I can get a Wadia 861 board?
It is worth taking to a local repair shop. It looks like the outputs are discrete amplifier sections. If your problem is there, it will allow a qualified repair person to quickly diagnose and replace bad parts and chances are good for finding the ...

@elizabeth spraketh thus:Stop believing anything some other idiot writes"Other idiot?" Hahahaha. But overall her post is well taken. As many here may remember, I make my own speakers. I have enough measurement gear here to tell me exactly what the...
Cerebral versus Visceral?
One thing that made me think of skin hearing was a reviewer talking about listening to an ESL with a specially made tube amplifier built without transformers. ESL's like high voltage, so the tubes were hooked up directly. The reviewer mentioned so...
Cleaner music when laptop is on battery vs plugged in
Hunt around for the Furman prices. :) You can sometimes get a BIG savings. At the least, the two key features are SMP and LiFT. The noise filtering and surge protection is top notch.Best,Erik
Cerebral versus Visceral?
I want to expand on @nonoise point.One really interesting idea I've been thinking about for a while is where exactly in our body do we perceive music? The idea that the ear/brain mechanism is the only part of the equation may not be fully accurate...
Dynaco A25 -Hard to Believe
You can build the modern version as a kit, if you are interested:https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2-way-speaker-kits/seas-a26-10-2-way-kit-pair-based-on-the-cla...If ever there was a simple kit to get started with, this would be it. :) Best,E
Anyone Using Bose 901 speakers In A Home Theater?
Haha, Consumer reports sucks in some ways. As I recall, CR highly rated Allison speakers, after which Roy Allison reamed them for their testing methods, or so I was told, I never actually read this exchange, and the truth may be buried in someone'...
