JA Perspecitve Stereophile review
If you can bi-amp them, use a DSP on the bass to reel it in. Best of all worlds. I won't do a full-range speaker unless I can EQ the bass section separately anymore.

Oh, how about Falcon Acoustics? Famous for making BBC mini-monitor reproductions and kits:https://www.falconacoustics.co.uk/bbc-ls3-5a/falcon-ls35a-mini-monitor.html
How loud is too loud
glupson is right. Denon had a very cool idea though. You would turn the volume up to what you thought sounded "right" then turn the loudness down... so it would decrease in volume but by emphasizing the midrange. The effect was pretty cool. Even a...

Here's a calibrated microphone. You need to grab the calibration file online and move it to your phone, and not every app will use it. Audio Tools does. https://amzn.to/2JutQI5Best,E
Full-Range to Monitors
I also want to point out how much technology has really changed. Honestly the sub/satellite system from M&K was awful.  The sub was under powered, and in the room, without any EQ or room acoustics, it was either feast or famine. There was no g...

chachi - The JL audio has the single feature I admire most: great self-calibrating software.Otherwise I think they are way too expensive. But besides that, they are pretty awesome and I like how you are thinking. Best,E

Meaning no disrespect for Joseph Audio, but I don't think of them as a "very small speaker company." I thought they were reasonably successful, like Vandersteen, etc. Am I mistaken?
Full-Range to Monitors
I have gone back and forth. I started with Miller & Kriesel satellite / subwoofer sets, then 2.5 way, now listen to a large custom 2-way "stand mount" with a sub for movies. What I have learned is that the smaller speakers stay away from the b...

Fritz. Last show I went to he had among the best sound, was praised by musicians associated with Blue Coast Records. Very high quality parts at reasonable price points. http://www.fritzspeakers.com/He will basically whip something up or change it ...
speaker advice please
Sound stage is often improved not by speakers but by room acoustics. We just had a thread on this, but you may be a good candidate for 2.5 way speakers. Slim towers with 2 woofers and a tweeter. Many brands offer some version of this. The advantag...
Basic system for living room
I should point out, if you get it and it's not bright enough, Fritz can alter that. One of the nice things about getting a custom pair.
Basic system for living room
Get a custom pair from Fritz. Let him know you need them tuned specifically for a bookshelf. http://www.fritzspeakers.com/He can whip something up out of quality parts for about that much.  At the last audio show I went to, the musicians I talked ...
Help please
Here is a test. Lightly rest your fingers on the midrange and/or woofer of either speaker. They should vibrate more or less equally. You can actually do this for the tweeter as well but you must be even more careful. Another thing to do is to cove...

tcapone, If the loss of sound quality is still there at loud levels, you blew a driver. if not, you are suddenly self aware of your ear's limitations. Tuning speakers with a smile like curve helps them sound better at low volumes. Loudness control...
Help please
So wait, if you swap the speaker location, the problem follows the speaker, or the problem stays in place?Hearing tests are good too! One thing that goes on with me is I get far too much wax buildup, quickly. I have to rigorously use a body wash a...
