Wifi music links / music servers
I used to use an M-Audio transit with my PC... Its system-agnostic...
where does Quicksilvers sonic signature fall in ?
I ran a pair of their Silver Edn monos through Proac RS2s for years. I later switched to an ARC VT-100, and the Q's were definitely "darker." Based on other's responses, maybe the Q's were merely "warm" and the ARC's are bright by comparison. ;)

Well, its not really jitter free, in the sense that there is still jitter introduced by whatever is used to reclock the signal to the DAC, whether that is the squeezebox or a USB audio device. I'll also admit that while I have a couple squeezebox ...
Can a PC match the quality of the best CD players?
Sorry, a CD burner is the lingo used to describe a drive that "burns" CD blanks--i.e., writes to them. To rip a CD, you need a CD reader.A CD transport gets to read the data on a CD once and, even if there is some buffering, the bits read off the ...
Can a PC match the quality of the best CD players?
Actually, you don't need a burner to read CDs... ;)The issue here is that if you proceed like some have recommended, *everything* behind the USB cord is isolated from the audio chain and--unless your computer is so bad it blows the buffering for t...
Can a PC match the quality of the best CD players?
If you are looking for a fanless solution that is really dedicated, or near dedicated, for audio, look at the Serener ITX PCs. With the NEC spinpoint drive, its dead quiet (that doesn't give you a huge amount of storage, but its networked to a 1TB...
Can a PC match the quality of the best CD players?
Here's my narrow and non-technical view:Each time a CD/Transport reads data off a silver disk, its doing it in real time. Yes, there is error correction and yes there is error tolerance. But, its subject to the vagaries of reading in real time or ...
Hagerman HagUsb vs M-audio Transit - anyone yet?
16/44.1 is 1.4 mbps, 24/96 is 4.6 mbps. My recollection is that USB 1.1 is 10 mbps and USB 2.0 is about 40. So, I think USB 1.1 is probably OK for 16/44.1, but you might want USB 2.0 for upsampled tunes. I don't remember which interface the U24 ru...
Hagerman HagUsb vs M-audio Transit - anyone yet?
The U24 is 24/48 like the Hag. Mine goes to a dCS Purcell, so anything over 16/44.1 is overkill for me...
Need Advice on a DAC for my Music Server?
Still may be the m-audio device. USB is jitter free, but the USB device has to reclock the data. Some do it better than others. Audioengr here mods transits with a better clock, but I gather its not a simple mod.My rig, which is Apple Lossless to ...
DAC with AirTunes?
BT runs in the same band as microwave ovens, 2.4 GHz cordless phones, and Wi-Fi. So, even if you could get PCM digital out of a dock, the bandwidth limits of BT are going to kill you. And, I suspect Pabelson is right--the dock is not going to give ...
Need Advice on a DAC for my Music Server?
I agree with Kenn39. Lossy compression means you lose things in the compression process--takes advantage of the pschoacoustic coding mechanisms Duane was referring too. Lossless compression means smaller file size but no loss of data integrity. If...
DAC with AirTunes?
Don't think you are ever going to be able to use your Nano for a remote... Its a fine device for what it is but... it doesn't have a digital out; it doesn't have the capacity to store any significant amount of non-lossy compressed music; it doesn'...
The new guy has a question....
You have it exactly right. RCA L&R is analog, so the D-A conversion is happening in your Denon. Coax/toslink is digital, so the conversion is happening in your pre/pro. As far as the CATV box, the same applies--if the RCA you are talking about...
A simple question from the new guy ....
You will still get surface noise, although it can be minimized to a degree with good record cleaners. Somehow I find it easier to ignore than compressed dynamics... YMMV.
