Are all Audiophiles masocists?
My better half may say otherwise, but I don't consider myself a masochist on any level. If I love something I work at it. When I reach a level of satisfaction I kick back and enjoy.
Classical Music for Aficionados
I just saw a dynamite performance of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto on YouTube. Andre Watts piano. Zubin Mehta and the New York Phil. A true treat.
Should music critics also be audiophiles?
Let 'em rip.  Loving music to the point where you make a living listening to it is a natural companion to being an audiophile. I've also always been kind of at a loss concerning musicians that don't seem to give a whit about the quality of the rec...
What is ideal dimension size for a home listening room?
Dudes, I just measured my room. My ratio is 1:1.63. 14 Karat gold? Or 24 Karat tin?
Qobuz vs Tidal
jjss -- I use a Mytek Brooklyn Bridge Streaming DAC connected to a PrimaLuna integrated amp. The Mytek BB is set to volume bypass mode. In terms of the sound quality between Tidal and Qobuz, it's easiest to resort to the cliche and call Tidal more...
Digital Library - or Not? Needed?
Re: getting rid of your CDs. Well, my portable hard drive died a couple days ago.  I took it to a local computer fix-it joint to get it running again or, alternatively, to extract the files and put them in a new one. I've got both fingers & to...
Has Radicalizing the Rig Led to Revolutionized Listening?
Follow your tastes. But yeah, I agree with you. Though the physical act necessary to set a guitar string in motion does allow the electric guitar to attain an unmistakable acoustic instrument integrity/veritas/credibility, in the main acoustic ins...
Digital Library - or Not? Needed?
I truly enjoy going to my rack of CDs and letting my eyes roam.  I'll pull out a likely suspect.  Maybe I'll put it back and pull one out that's nearby.  It's a process that, woah, is just like choosing a slice of vinyl. In any case, it's far more...
Qobuz or Tidal?
anzaanimalclinic -- It's interesting that you chose Tidal over Qobuz using exactly the same criteria by which I chose Qobuz, except with a different conclusion.  Let freedom ring!  On the other hand, maybe we can blame it on our different stereo r...
A pragmatic view of cartridge expenses / many questions
In for a dime; in for ten thousand bucks.  Be nice to your cartridge but enjoy the heck out of it.  By the time it wears down to the point where you have to replace it (barring catastrophe, of course), chances are there'll be something better...an...
Hardwood floors vs carpets
stretch -- one of the magical things about what happens when you fit an LP inside a square cardboard jacket and put a bunch of 'em edgewise into bookcases is that very little of the disk is actually close enough to the out-facing edge to harden th...
Hardwood floors vs carpets
I’m lovin’ my latest stereo room. A new house. Purpose-built room. Hardwood floors. High quality drywall walls and ceiling. Careful speaker placement. Ninety percent of the damping derives from several thousand LPs lining the walls and a nicely st...
My pet peeve: "revealing" speakers
To me the term "revealing" for a component simply means that 90% of the stuff played through it sounds ugly.
An Odd Question
I've never heard any notable change when I've had one of my acoustic guitars sitting on a stand as I played my stereo. True, sometimes the guitar boomed or buzzed a bit in sympathy but when it comes to tone or imaging emanating from the stereo, no...
Outstanding service from MusicDirect in the USA and Avid Hifi in the UK, read on please!
Audio Advisor has given me excellent service, as well.  The only place Music Direct comes off a bit better is that their selection is slightly more mouthwatering.  As for Dedicated Audio, I've never heard of them!
