One of the great things about Vinyl
The trouble is, I'm a sucker when it comes to tone.
One of the great things about Vinyl
@sokogear I just did some A/B listening with the dust cover both on and off of the turntable. It's a draw. No dust cover gives me slightly better imaging and wider soundstage. Dust cover gives me slightly better tonality. My test record -- a very ...
One of the great things about Vinyl
@hifiman5 --- I had a rec-o-vac for several years. Whenever I'd take a record off the shelf I hadn't played in a while I'd run it through the thing. And yes, It improved the sound in every way. Less groove noise. Better imaging and more intelligib...
Thee Sacred Souls
KCRW -- Cool! All my buddies & girlfriends lived their lives while listening to that station. A little too hippie-dippy for me, though.  And, at least in pre-internet days, tough to hear if life took you over the Sepulveda Pass into the Valley.
Goodbye Everyone
@rok2id I see the conversations here as more spirited than confrontational. It doesn't hurt that we all share the same passion -- enjoying music recreated with the breath of life. If tastes might differ, so be it.
Whats playing on your system today?
Floating through the F’s on my pop LP shelves. Enjoying it, too. Fleetwood Mac, Rumours. Yeah, the mammoth hit that repelled the band’s core fans while seducing the rest of the planet. It still sounds pretty good. Sexy. Inviting. Some good artifi...
Goodbye Everyone
Enjoy your days! I hope you eventually re'up!
What is the most challenging music to play on a stereo?
Vocalists. Any genre. Do the male voices suffer from a buzzy midrange distortion? Or do they sound rich, clear and authentically human?  Are the sibilants spitty or hashy?  Or are they just like you hear when somebody's talking to you? The same go...
Do you play any...?
I haven't played a gig in years.  At the very most, I sit on the porch and serenade the neighbors walking their dogs. And oh yeah, I also play an Old Time open-back banjo.
Whats on your turntable tonight?
I've been raiding my 45rpm singles box -- Elvis Presley --Tutti Fruiti Lonnie Lord -- Rat Fink Witch Doctor -- David Seville (Alvin the Chipmunk is un-billed). Tommy James and the Shondells -- Hanky Panky (Do I love this one!!!)
Why do we stop listening to new music as we get older?
I know I'll get beaten up for this, but J.S. Bach may be my least favorite among the accepted pantheon of Top Classical Composers. Too many of J.S.'s pieces feel mechanical. More busy than inspired. Cranked out on deadline for a fee. To be sure, p...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
bkeske -- I'm a Mehta fan, too.  When I did my time as a sales clerk at the Tower Records Classical Annex on the Sunset Strip, however, my hyper-refined fellow clerks were less than taken with the guy. In any case, Mehta actually showed up at the ...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Hey, @bkeske -- I saw Mehta and the L.A. Phil several times during my younger days. I saw him lead the LAPO at the Music Center a couple times. I was at the Hollywood Bowl (or was it the Greek?) when Frank Zappa played with the L.A. Phil and dryly...
Is soundstage DEPTH a myth?
r27y8u92 -- I pursue high-end audio because listening to high fidelity is such a viscerally rewarding experience. It's pure pleasure, something that seems to be an anathema in your world view. Yeah, I could survive on gruel, too, but I don't.
Is soundstage DEPTH a myth?
How come almost every animal that's ever existed has had both a pair of eyes and a pair of ears, both separated by a decent distance in order to allow them to appreciate three-dimensionality? I mean, sure, it's in survival's best interest to have ...
