A Different "Analog" Question I have a life-long love for wristwatches. The proper time is never more than a slight wrist flick away. By comparison, a smart phone is totally clumsy. I'd rather approach a person on the street and politely ask them the time. I never have to jugg...
Harry Belafonte passed...... I saw him live one evening, I think it was at L.A.'s Greek Theater. Truly outgoing and captivating. In gorgeous voice. I'm 99% sure his opening act was the folk duo Hedge & Donna, whose LP I still play occasionally.
Sat front row at the symphony... I’m pretty mellow when it comes to what I consider acceptable fidelity in a live context. I figure it’s all real. Just different versions of real. Even when everything is electrified or sound-reinforced. By the same token, though, some of the bes...
I found audio nirvana.... Right now I'm streaming a selection of Stravinsky's orchestral music via Idagio. Andrew Davis conducting the BBC Philharmonic from the Chandos label. Yeah, just CD quality but the sound is glorious. Sweet as the proverbial nut. Image is precise ye...
I found audio nirvana.... For me, it's a truly rare occasion when better sound quality doesn't enhance the listening experience. True, it can be charming and quaint to hear seriously compromised sound, but it'd thrill me no end to hear an old Toscanini or Enrico Caruso per...
Sat front row at the symphony... I'm not sure I'm being accurate as to what fleschler is saying here, but to me he's saying there are a whole bunch of absolute sounds. There's no "the" in TAS. I have to agree, too. In any case, the question is now whether your sound system can gr...
I found audio nirvana.... I gotta differ. Yeah, if a piece of music has genuine quality and is played with commitment & skill, it isn't difficult to overlook the ultimate quality of sound. But when you add sound quality to the ledger, things get a whole lot better. To ...
Classical Aficionados: Please Suggest Debussy Solo Piano recordings @newbee --I just listened to the Bavouset via Qobuz. Truly worthwhile. And better sound than my old Entremont. Now I got two keepers!
Admitting my error… I'm sure I've said all this a dozen times, but occasional cracks and pops are fine with me. Gentle warps are fine, too. It's fun watching the tonearm rise and fall. It's off-center pressings, spitty sibilants, and outright distortion in voices &am...
Is it possible for a high end manufacturer to overprice their goods? Get what you can afford...or can stretch for. Visit a handful of dealers or at least get into communication with a few. Explain your situation and how many bucks you can part with. Tell 'em what you listen to, i.e., what you like. Only play Led ...
What is the most challenging music to play on a stereo? @pangeek -- Yes, all the hammers on a true acoustic piano are padded. Some brands more than others. As the piano is played and the hammers strike the strings, they eventually compress & harden up and produce a brighter tone. When things go a ...
Admitting my error… A fun way to do it would be to go to a major media metropolis like NYC or L.A. and cruise the used record stores. I don't know for sure if they still exist (I'm a former, now long gone Angeleno), but I'd bet they're thriving.
Sat front row at the symphony... I've sat in every possible spot for various classical concerts over the decades and, yeah, I got to say that being in the front few rows in the center two-thirds of a hall is just wonderful. To heck with missing the proper synthesis/amalgamation o...
Sound level listening 75 to 80 db. Except when I'm listening to the Ramones.
Classical Aficionados: Please Suggest Debussy Solo Piano recordings I'm still hopelessly devoted to my now ancient Philippe Entremont Columbia Masterworks LP, "Claire de Lune." Unfussy. Unforced. Effortless virtuosity. Fidelity is good enough. The pieces are played in an order that makes genuine emotional sense. |
