Was your first cartridge relatively expensive?
Ejlif, no offense, but I'd find another dealer. I've been playing records for a lot longer than 50 years and the table itself is by far the most important element. People thought Ivor Tiefenbrun (Linn Sondek) was crazy when he propounded this idea...
Isolation of my chair, am I crazy???
Let me be the first to suggest that you find something to push your ears outward. You can cup them with your hands, but that will simply convince people you're hard of hearing :-)Dave
Are the TT's of the 70-80 as good as the new ones
For a real treat, try to listen to one of the old Idler-drive turntables (Lenco, some Garrards, Rek-O-Kuts, Russcos, Thorens, etc.) that have been removed from their original plinths and installed in new high-mass ones (my newest Lenco weighs 70+ ...
Diff in recording/reproduction in Analog/CD/SACD
Shadome, I could prove you wrong in 30 seconds. Listen to a CD or SACD on my $3,000 player. Then to the same performance on vinyl via my replinthed Lenco turntable. Forget theory, let your ears tell you what's real. Dave
I'm New To Vinyl - Which Turntable Should I Buy?
Don't be discouraged by the Record Cleraning Machine cost. You can get a perfectly good one from Audio Advisor for $239. Whether or not you get into vinyl, it sounds like you have a problematic room with those dimensions and might want to look int...
Upgrades for older Conrad Johnson?
A reliable power switch would be nice. Good luck, Dave
Possible stylus damage to my DenonDL103
You might try aligning the arm relative to the stylus (i.e., not straight in the headshell) and see how it sounds. At least the spherical-stylus DL-103 is less critical than carts with elliptical styli. I wouldn't try to straighten it further -- y...
RtR Electrostatic Hybrid Speaker ?
The RTR tweeters are great-sounding -- when they work. Way back when, I was using Infinity 2000A speakers that had 4 of these tweeters per side. I had noticed an increasing weakness in the treble and came to discover that most of the tweeters were...
Suggestions for bang for your buck speaker cables
Grain? Grit? Sounded a lot better to me than some $1200 stuff -- to its (former) owner too. I like it better between SET monoblocks and Gallo Reference 3 speakers than anything else I've tried. You may too. Or you may not. Dave
HFNR and antiskate on SME 3009/III
Listen to Nsgarch. That test record will lead you astray every time. I tried its "torture tests" and the only cart/arm I have that will sail through all four of them is a l962 Empire arm with a Stanton 881 cart on it, and it has no antiskating pro...
Looking for a CD-R to transfer vinly to CD
I've yet to experience any deterioration of the ones I've created with a Tascam CD-RW700, but it wouldn't surprise me. Have done my share of sharpie-writing, to compound the problem. Time to knock wood, I guess. BTW, the Teac machines DO require s...
Record Cleaning Machines
As a satisfied Nitty Gritty user since the early l980s, I've never understood the bit about the VPI providing a "stable platform." Do you guys bear down so hard while scrubbing that you're in danger of breaking the record? The plain old manual Nit...
Suggestions for bang for your buck speaker cables
The Home Depot wire was actually 14 gauge outdoor extension cord rather than 10 gauge and was reviewed by Paul Seydor of TAS. It will cost you next to nothing to try it. I use an entire cable (3 conductors) in the forward/+/"red" direction (i.e., ...
turntable mat : boston mat, audioquest sorbogel ma
Still don't know what mat(s) you're talking about. The Boston Audio mat is pure graphite and quite hard; the AQ one is soft. In any event, why not wait until you get the turntable and try them both?
Cartridge Tacking Problems - Help please
Just some thoughts. Are you using an external scale to set VTF or relying on the tonearm scale if there is one)? Have you taken the arm lightly in hand and swung it over the record to see if you can detect any points where there is less than free ...
