Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Hi George,  I'm thinking of an DIY LDR attenuator to replace the stock 10K Alps dual pot in a Sennheiser HEV70 energizer for HE60 electrostatic headphones.  I need to step down from 25Vdc to 5V for this application. The chassis is cramped and ther...
2016: a new year for music....
I'm enjoying the Lucinda LP, but am not quite convinced that Bill Frisell is net positive with unvarnished Lucinda.  The album is over-polished in the typical Frisell way-- he is more of a jazzman than a bluesman-- with occasional tugs-of-war betw...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
It's a bit more complicated than that.  Each slider is matched to its air manifold at factory.  To update a slider to banded cups you need to break off the alum bearing cradles glued to your existing slider, then glue on replacement cradles that a...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Harold, you already had the disease. It just mutated....On Terminator the inside corners of the aluminum angle "thrust pads" on which the two needle bearings pivot, are replaced by thick, tensioned horizontal rubber bands. The pivoting needles fix...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Hello Harold, Congratulations on your PD444.  I haven't yet tried the Terminator arm on my PD444, as it would be too crowded for three tonearms-- which was one of my reasons for the Luxman purchase.  I tried Resomat on top of the stock Luxman rubb...
Stylus Warm-up Time
An audiophile who I respect warms his cartridges with a hair dryer before listening at ambient temps below 70F.  In winter conditions of 65F in the listening room I sense  that cartridges need 10-15 minutes in the grooves to wake up.
Turntable for life
@213cobra I'm with you on the Luxman PD444-- mine with brass footers, Stillpoints, and a custom subplinth for mounting a third arm. This one gives the most enjoyment of my four(L07D, SP10 MkII, & modified VPI TNT).  Have you found an aftermark...
Bad caps???
Have you tried cleaning all tube sockets, tube pins, fuse end caps and fuse holders?  If there are fuses on the PCBs, check with an ohmmeter to confirm that they have near zero resistance.  The resistance inside a fuse can occasionally creep up as...
Tonearm recommendation
I think I have a sense of what Raul is talking about. He has mentioned that he has or is familiar with and likes a Kuzma 4P. I have one of these on a restored and modified Luxman PD444, mounted together with two vintage SME 3012R 12" arms. This SM...
Thiel Owners
Owners of standard CS2.4 speakers may be interested to know that the only internal difference that makes a 2.4SE is the use of ClarityCap SA film capacitors.  DIYers can make this upgrade or better by substituting the more recently introduced ESA ...
Absolute top tier DAC for standard res Redbook CD
JWM, thanks for your download on CES 2016.  After reading Valin's sycophantic praise for the Martin Logan Neolith as best in show I feared for my sanity. I have heard the Neolith sound uniformly mediocre at Axpona and RMAF in rooms of varying size...
Jimmy Fallon has a Mcintosh turntable
Mark Maron is another Brooks Berdan customer and vinyl freak.  He shows a Mac TT and Mac monoblocks in his TV ranch living room, and occasionally works it into the plotline.http://www.thevinyldistrict.com/nashville/2013/05/marc-maron-the-tvd-inter...

Signet TK100 LC cartridge. - Looking for Info
A TK10ML also came in with the Luxman set-up on a second Signet XK-50, but the cantilever is too skewed for accurate set-up.  Hopefully I'll find someone to straighten it.On the Trans-Fi arm the TK100LC compares well to neutral and extended MM/MIs...
Signet TK100 LC cartridge. - Looking for Info
A TK100LC came to me in very good condition, mounted to a Signet XK-50 arm on a Luxman PD444.  So far I've only tried this cartridge on a Trans-Fi Terminator, on which it sounded fine.  It is certainly in the upper echelon of vintage MM/MIs I've o...
