What's going on with the audio market?
The second figure(the age at which one began to spend seriously on the hobby), I was hoping to distinguish from the age at which one first acquired a memorable system. The inflection point for spending is more helpful in measuring the arc of consu...
What's going on with the audio market?
@whart My wife and daughter have said that they’ll probably end up burying the equipment with me-- they have no idea how to turn it on and off and queue up an LP, let alone how to sell it off. At some point the question of unwinding surfaces. On t...
What's going on with the audio market?
@jmcgrogan2 Not to quibble over a silly 1%, but if the second figure is the age when we got serious about buying, then((61-35)+(55-27))/((61-35)+(55-27)+4)= 93%
What's going on with the audio market?
@jmcgrogan2 So between us, we have 54 man years of active purchasing, with 4 to go. We're 93% finished with heavy buying.  Anybody else?
What's going on with the audio market?
Truth or dare, if everyone who visits this site answers three questions, we may have an answer. What is your age? At what age did you begin to seriously exercise your purchasing power on audio?  How many more years do you plan to commit serious mo...
Scotch? No thanks. Whats the best Vodka.?
Among the milder tasting vodkas, Grey Goose but Hammermill is remarkably close and unbeatably priced 60% less.  Titos is smooth but tasteless.  Come to think of it, it's almost cocktail hour.
Downsizing Setup Looking for Small 2 Way speakers. Selling my Perfect Storm Vapor Audio.
+1 DC10audio for small horns. I’ve heard them at several shows where they sounded fine without shouting.
Pass XP25
I’ve lived with an XP-25 for several years. Its lowest 53db gain setting works well with MM/MI, as does its switch-selectable capacitance settings. For MM/MI one would wish for alternatives to the 47K load setting. Its wide range of load settings ...
Sources for information and/or advice on dedicated AC lines desired
Also, I've heard good things about Cardas AC wires designed for use inside the walls.  Possibly worth a look.
Sources for information and/or advice on dedicated AC lines desired
I've had good experiences with a 5kva balanced power transformer.  Next move I plan to run a 240V line to the listening room, where a 10kva or larger transformer can be plugged into the wall and output several isolated 120V threads to the audio sy...
What's the most overrated or overpriced piece of equipment you own, have owned or come by?
The $4K represents everything in the loom.  Materials for the speaker cables cost $750.BTW, I'm not suggesting that cables are unimportant-- rather that this endeavor is accessible to the average DIYer with almost no knowledge of electronics.  Onc...
What's the most overrated or overpriced piece of equipment you own, have owned or come by?
Bondmanp, Cables are an area where a little research and basic DIY skill, together with the use of first-rate materials and a modest investment of time, produces VG to excellent results at reasonable prices. My current loom isPCs: shielded 8awg .9...
What's the most overrated or overpriced piece of equipment you own, have owned or come by?
I agree with you about the "passion" thing.  I think of an expensive cable like a $5 cup of coffee: a momentary gratification, an impulse for novelty, an affordable expenditure relative to electronics, and a usually wasted surplus that would be mo...
Cartridge loading question
@asp307 , as with most MM/MI cartridges the Zephyr is specified for loading at 47K or higher.  I'm surprised it sounds good at 250R.
What's the most overrated or overpriced piece of equipment you own, have owned or come by?
Pretty much every commercial audio cable I ever purchased(relative to DIY efforts.)
