The recent Rhino 4-LP clear vinyl of Capitol Theater Passaic NJ 4/25/77 is a home run.  Excellent performance and SQ and not a click or pop from end to end.
In Memoriam: Bobby Palkovich of Merlin Music
I think Rich posted that he planned to offer Merlin upgrades.  This would be a good thing and a fitting legacy, as Bobby had been refreshing the older models in this manner for many years--  perhaps too long for the good of his company. You should ...
InfiniCaps or V cap upgrades for ARC LS7
Modifying it might reduce its resale value, but if you intend to keep it for awhile you will be pleasantly surprised by the improvement after replacing the stock REL caps and also the Wima filtering caps on the power rails.  I did this to an old A...
Linear Tracking Turntables - Best??
Dentdog, I also own and love a TransFi. A good way to check bearing play on that arm is to mount a laser pen so that it reflect at 90 degrees off the pressurized aluminum slider onto the ceiling(the taller the ceiling, the finer the resolution). I...
Do supertweeters matter when we cant hear past 15,000 hz?
I like the extension of a Tannoy ST-100 super-tweeter on top of an Esotar 330D tweeter that has good HF extension of itself. (In the Merlin application the Esotar is down several db at 20khz.) But while the ST is set high at a nominal 18khz, in ac...
Why are record cleaners so expensive?
I took delivery today of an Elma P60H.  So far cleaned just one record for 5 minutes at 37khz and 15 min at 80khz.  The Elma removed loads of noise that the Chinese unit couldn't touch, and it's quiet enough to use in the room while listening to m...
Why are record cleaners so expensive?
Minkwelder, Paisan, was it a fly yellow '98 monoposte?Terry9, Thanks for the encouragement to stretch for the Elma Sonic.  I haven't heard that much praise of "german engineering" since the Volkswagen saga...we'll see how it goes.Samzx12, I envy y...
Why are record cleaners so expensive?
samzx12, I hear you about Harleys. But FWIW, I ride a Ducati 916 for sport and a Ninja 1000ABS for touring-- both of which require more than a yardstick to measure tolerances.  Ditto the quest for clean sounding records.
Grateful Dead: Mars Hotel LP recording
I don't have Mars on Mofi, but have several of the newer Mofi series done at 45RPM on their Gain 2 system. Workingman's Dead and American Beauty sound incredibly detailed, rich, dimensional and quiet.  Ditto Miles Davis Filles de Kilimanjaro and S...
Why are record cleaners so expensive?
From what I've read, the high frequency units  dislodge smaller particles, are gentler than the 40hz units, and require more time to get the job done.  I'm in process of shifting from a $170 40hz Chinese machine to a $1350 Elma Sonic German unit t...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
That’s interesting about the life span of electrolytics. Electrolytic manufacturers typical spec capacitor life at several thousand hours--though I suppose that this is calculated at the most extreme conditions of voltage and temperature. I only h...
Questionable service at Soundsmith
@iopsrl, I think you’re correct. Several positive experiences with retipped vintage cartridges has convinced me that in most cases the suspension outlives the stylus. This makes retipping attractive and worthwhile, particularly in view of the upwa...

Peter, if you could also contact me regarding my long-standing RA, that would be much appreciated. Thanks,Dave Garretson  RA15265
Questionable service at Soundsmith
Unfortunately my story coincides with the OP.  My Lyra has been with SS for thirteen months.  I know that Peter has had serious family troubles during that time, but I am approaching the point of calling my cartridge home.  If SS does complete the...
OK...I've ditched my mono cartridge
I wouldn’t claim that the AT 33MONO is the last word in mono cartridges, but for me the things that it does well with mono LPs outweigh its shortcomings relative to the excellent stereo cartridges playing mono that I’ve compared it to(AT ART7, Ort...
