ARCAM CD23 internal DAC vs. stand-alone DAC
If you can find a copy of the Stereophile review of the Arcam CD33 it might be helpfull. They did try the Benchmark DAC with the 33 and if my recollection is correct it did some things better, some not as good. I have heard the 23 and the 33 and I...
Help with VPI Mk 19 Jr.
I had and enjoyed a 19Jr for a long time, super great table. I would not use a mat on it at all. Get a lint free cloth and clean the platter with the old style windex. You can get a template from Audioquest, it is the same dimension as the PT-9. Y...
VTL ST-150 w/ B&W
I have not heard the new 805's, previously I thought the B&W were a bit bright. This is a matter of taste of course but I did listen a lot to the older 804 and the new 804 and I found a nice improvement, less bright, cleaner midrange with more...
VTL ST-150 w/ B&W
I have heard the VTL with the 804 and there is no problem at all. Even in triod the amp had pleanty of muscle. It can also drive the 803d fine, though the VTL 185monobloc sounded better, the stereo 150 is also a resonable choice for the 803d.
Beatles Love, should I run?
I have the vinyl and it is a very nice LP. Good mix, nice sound and their is no noise on my copy. Very enjoyable. I hear that it is limited in number so I would not wait to long.
12AX7 vs. 5751
I use a matched set of 5751 NOS RCA from 1959 in my Belles 21A preamp. I went to them from Mullard 12AX7. I found no audible difference in gain with my system. I found the RCA's to provide a little more air and detail between instruments, a little...
Who is Michael Fremers'
A nice review and I usually enjoy Fremer's reviews. Thanks Rauliruegas for getting the cart to him to review. You appear to go out of your way to spread the enjoyment of vinyl.
At what quality of a CDP negates the use of a DAC?
I would guess when the internal dac exceeds the quality and sound of the external add on dac. It really depends on what you are comparing it to. I am often surprised by the number of people who use external dacs with the idea that by using an exte...
Arcam fmj cd33
I have the Arcam 33 and really like it a lot. Very easy to listen to, musical, detailed. I would say it is a little on the warm side, not bright, yet does not seem to lack any detail. I have considered an upgrade to the Naim CD2X but have not been...
Waltz for Debbie - Analog Productions _ BIl Evans
I have found the the Analog Productions LP's are usually very good. I also recommend the Waltz for Debbie.
input & output cable for Nakamchi tape deck
I have use the Audio Art IC-3 with a Nakamichi DR1 using metal and chrome tapes and they were wonderful. Great detail, very good of record and playback. I would recommend very easily. Good price point. There are some good write ups on positive fee...
Jazz vinyl- go for originals or new reissues?
It depends. I have a few original Blue Note Deep groove and though pricey the ones in my collection are the very pinnical of what vinyl can be. I also have a complete set of East Wind direct to disk that I think were worth the price. I also look f...
BACH Cello Suites - CD only
I have the Starker Mercury in redbook CD and enjoy it very much. I primarily listen to it on the excellent reissue heavy wt. vinyl and am not disappointed in the CD quality. I would expect the hybrid to be as good as the redbook cd.
TDK SA-X or Maxell XLII-S which do you prefer?
I have a supply of both, I think that they are about equal but I do use a slightly different bias setting when recording for each. The XLII-S is usually easier and less costly to purchase giving it a bit of an edge.
How far would you drive to audition a component?
I sometimes will plan auditions when I am traveling. I plan on being in boston Mass. this spring for a conference so will arrange a visit or two with local dealers. I let dealers know my situation and plans and if I do audition from them and end u...
