Rel T1/T2 ??
Don't agree with Stanwal, the T series can be very good for audio. I am currently using a T5 in my system and it's a champ, seamlessly integrating and providing a very impressive foundation. In a very small room, like the one I use, the T5 or a si...
The best speaker you ever heard?
Lacee, I see you owned Stacked Quad 57's. I never owned these, but I remember fondly the first time I heard a pair, they were simply amazing. What did you replace them with and why?
My system's high frequencies hurt my ears
Robpriore, I think you have a simple problem which is caused by the Nordost Blue Heaven and a hard dome speaker. At the best of times, whenever I have heard Blue Heaven it has a bright coloration that is very obvious when you listen to some of the...

Hifikeek1 and Johnsonwu, IF you had an unlimited budget for cap replacement, which caps would you use in the D70 or the D115? and why?
Sonus Faber Liuto vs. original Cremona
Okay, quick answer..:0)You need to listen to both in your room with your system to determine which suits your preferences better. Both speakers are good speakers, both have very different presentations and will appeal to different listeners based ...

JohnsonWu, I just don't agree with your assessment of the sound that the older ARC amps exhibit. My D70Mk2 has wowed all of the a'phile group that has heard it in my system. So much so, that one of the group traded a BAT VK75SE for a pair of M100'...

JohnsonWu, you say that every time you have used vintage ARC amps, even after replacing the caps, that they still exhibit smear and glare but at higher headroom. In my system and with the original caps in the ARC, I am not exhibiting this symptom....
Have you ever heard about Wingate?
A friend owned a Wingate in the late 80's and into the early 90's. A very impressive amp and one that I wished I could afford at the time. Haven't heard much about them in the interim years...so I will be following this thread closely.

Sbrown, Thanks for sharing that info on the KT120's. I was wondering about this and was going to call Arc about it. You just saved me the call, LOL. Too bad, as the KT120 is a very good tube. With decent 6550's getting a little hard to find, I'm g...
Review: Audio Research D-70 mkII Tube amp
LOL Johnsonwu, I suspect that they are equally as difficult to bias. My tech, whom has worked on everything from ARC to Mac to Bat etc., wasn't at all pleased with this amp's biasing. He told me that ARC had to have been out of their tiny minds if...

'Foggy', certainly isn't a term that comes to mind when I listen to my ARC!Not sure what you are hearing, but if 'Foggy' is a factor, then I would suggest you look elsewhere in the chain for the offender.

Johnsonwu, sorry to hear of your travails. I would say that there must be something still wrong with your D115M2 if it sounds foggy and a bit slow. Did you replace all of the tubes and check the caps?
Top big-name monitors current versions .
Rgs92, IF you can find a pair of Sonus Faber Guarneri's, I would suggest giving them a listen. The original Hommage is my personal favorite, but the Evolutions (which I have not heard) are the latest in the line and look very promising. The Mement...

Hi Johnsonwu, I may be misunderstanding your intent. If you are not planning on changing the circuit that is inherent in the amp, then there are no real risks that I can see. BTW, I agree with you that the circuit is superior to the Classic 120's ...

Johnsonwu, I will be very interested in your outcome after you have modded your D115Mk2. WZ Johnson got the circuit very right, IMHO. Changing what he designed could be a risky business, OTOH I applaud your experimentation.
