What do you have on order RIGHT NOW. Tubes4HiFi SP12 preamp. Set up with a passive buffer. If I ever want to turn into an active preamp can be easily modified. Finally the solution to all the volume controls in my system.
Is the appeal to euphonic distortion learned? Is audio equipment voiced for the public or what the designer thinks sounds the best? None of it is perfect. We have to get used to what we hear. Initial listening can be "oh my" to wincing. Later on, it can still be bad or good.
Suggest one obsure album we all should hear Bryan Ferry "Boys and Girls": All star lineup. Used to play this on a long trip when we needed to go that last hour. Kraftwerk: 3-D Catalogue. Reworked old favorites. Amazing sonics. King Krimson Live in Montreal: Especially "Sartori in Tangier". ...
Low gain preamp options I just went through this with my system. I was running direct from DAC to amp but the digital volume was unpredictable and appears to "bit strip" in some cases. It does not sound right unless you turn it up. I also can get quite loud volume wit...
For a few dollars more Play Misty for Me. I can tell I traded the Torino for the Porsche. It did " make my day"
members and their systems Don't drink, boat, snowmobile, fast cars, expensive meals, golf. All comparable hobbies in cost. Seek out bargains and used. It can be one and done or a roller coaster. It can be detective work, engineering, OCD or neurosis.
Opinions wanted: 10-30K Speakers for Jazz/Folk I like the Tannoy. Beautiful cabinets. I heard Turnberry @ 6k a pair. They were smooth and effortless. They bigger ones should sound even better. Also Sonus Faber. The ones i heard were about $22K new. Preferred over Sasha DAW. Rockport gets good...

Horn speakers , high efficiency but not “shouty” I personally like immediacy, dynamics, clear, effortless sound. Set up properly, horns are quite smooth and relaxing to listen to. Are people saying shouty meaning forward? Also, Volti had a low impedance dip so will a small watt amp play them pr...
enough amplifier power So many things I agree with here, and disagree. Having efficient speakers opens up so many more choices in amps. I can drive my Crites speakers with the XA25(really 80W) to at least 105dB continuous without leaving Class A. Clear as a bell. Gr...
Streamer wanted My experience with interface:Amazon Music via bluetooth: easy functionality, not as good as ethernet cableSpotify just went HiRez by the way. Bluesound Node 2i: Interface doesn't work completely with Amazon but once you get around the quirks, i...
Preamp or not. I don' t think there is one answer to this passive vs active debate. It depends on your system. If 2V SE or 4V BAL from a DAC is enough to drive your speakers and your amp is right sized, passive should be fine. If you have demanding speakers a...
DAC as a preamp? Yes, it sounds better DAC mode. And it sounds better after several hours of use.
Preamp or not. OP here. I worked with Roy atTubes4hifi and he helped me come up with a great solution, a passive with a tube buffer. We are using the SP12 with option for volume only and adding tubes if desired later for active. Otherwise the passive vs active...
