Suspensions on turntable...really effective?
I think the issue is, really effective against what? For example, a Linn, although spring-mounted, is terrible with footfalls, while a Basis, also spring mounted, is much better.  There are many theories as to how to design a tt.  Some say that sp...
What the *#$@ happened??
I learned when I had my Linn, the type of platform can have a major influence on the sound and there is no predicting which platform will suit your tastes best.  When I had the Linn on my Naim Fraim (rack) the standard glass shelf sounded best, bu...
Direct Metal Mastering ( DMM ) LPs. What is this?
I think it's like a lot of things - no one factor is dispositive of the outcome. The Stockfish LPs are DMM and they are some of the best analog recordings I've ever heard.  So I wouldn't make a record purchase decision based on whether it was cut ...
Mint Tractor / Protractor for SME IV arm
I bought one for my Basis and immediately sold it.  I think they may be great for cartridges with the cantilevers sticking out in front like Lyra or Clearaudio, but it was impossible for me to use it with my Transfiguration, which has a tiny canti...
Best speakers for $3000
Unless your room emphasizes bass, I don't think you are going to be happy with the speakers listed above for the kind of music you listen to.  They are designed to be more neutral, which, IMO, does not lend itself well to home reproduction of rap ...
Universal Players vs. Dedicated CD/SACD Players
In my experience, dedicated CD players have better redbook performance than similarly, or even somewhat more expensive multi-format players.  I haven't tried very expensive (10K+) multi-format players, which may well have better CD performance.  I...
Cello setup, separate or not?
Why don't you just advertise it as a system and see what happens.  The market for that stuff is very limited, but the people who do want it would probably be excited to find a complete system.  If they want just one item, they will ask you if you ...
Phono Stage with Two Line-outs
Linn Linto has 2 line outs.  And I think it sounds very good too.
New sound system, $5000 max- what a would you do?
Depends on what kind of music he's into for speakers.  But for the rest, I would go for one brand like Cambridge or Marantz so the guy has tone controls.  Budding audiophiles need to add some bass here and there.  Plus, he can use one remote for t...
Latest Absolute Sound
I was in Great Neck, NY the other week and they have a Aston-Martin and Massarati dealers out there.  There are plenty of people with money.
Where did you sink the most cash into?
Speakers, analog, amp, digital, cables. But the system also sounded great when it was analog, amp, digital, speakers, cables. I don't really think about where a component falls dollar wise in the system.  I just buy what sounds good.  But I do thi...
SACD with LFD/ Harbeth
How do you know it is the Saturn that is causing the sonic issues you claim to be having? Have you tried another CD player?   That's what I was saying.  It's an unfortunate thing that, IMO, based on owning a Sony 5400, 9000 and an Esoteric X-5, th...
What would be a good turntable/tonearm/cartridge
Music Hall MMF5 or MMF7. Comes all set up with dustcover and cartridge. Plug and play. You will need a phono preamp, of course. The other thing I would add is a Herbies mat. But that's about it. Prices are about 800 and 1600 respectively. I don't ...
SACD with LFD/ Harbeth
I would work with speaker placement before I did anything. Maybe get them a bit further from the wall or change the stands or the way they are coupled to the stands. A harder footer could clean up the midbass and a bit more toe-in could result in ...
Why does a Sony PlayStation sound good to me?
Marantz players tend to run on the warmer/less-detailed side of the spectrum. I also think the cheaper Cambridge and NAD players exhibit the same qualities. I think audiophile too often look for very detailed players, but end up not liking them.
