Wacky Question about cartridges
I wasn't commenting on his particular choice of TTs. I've never owned a VPI and I have nothing against them, as I know some people do. Those arms are often love it or hate it with many. I was commenting on Lemmy's "mantra" statement. I wouldn't mo...
Wacky Question about cartridges
Lemmy - FYI, many knowledgeable analog fans believe the exact opposite of what you believe to be an excellent mantra. They would recommend a better table/arm combo and a more modest cartridge over what you suggest. A great cartridge cannot perform...
Turntable set up- How easy is it
It really depends on the table. I've done it myself and I think it came out OK, but I would always prefer to have a real artist do it - if you can find one. Not every dealer can necessarily do it better than you can. Therein lies the problem.
External DAC -general questions
I don't understand what you're saying. An analog signal will have a pair of RCA or XLR outputs. In order to use the DAC in your preamp, you will still have to run a single-wire digital signal from the source into the single-input digital input of ...
External DAC -general questions
You don't put an analog signal into a DAC. You take the direct digital out from the single-wire digital output and plug that into the digital input of the DAC. The signal is only converted to analog once - before the amplifier. But it wouldn't wor...
Upgrading - what amp to choose
@WillieW - The outboard PS also makes a huge difference on the CD players. You wouldn't believe it. I think every designer would probably want to put a big PS in a separate box, but the marketplace won't tolerate it. Peter Qvartrup from Audio Note...
DIY In wall cable : What do installers use?
I'm not sure, but I believe the fire codes require a certain type of cable be used for in-wall and I don't think you can install the typical high-end brands people use. You need to find this out before you set the house on fire.
For Basis TT owners does the VPI SDS work?
I've heard that the Walker works well with Basis, but I haven't bothered to try one. Not too expensive, especially compared to the Basis model.
Upgrading - what amp to choose
If you like the Nait, I would upgrade to the next level of integrated that permits you to add an outboard power supply like the flatcap or hicap. The improvement in sound quality by adding the PS is beyond what you would have thought. Yes, you do ...
Best High End Audio Manufacturer???
Actually, it's not a bad question. It's like Rolex representing the high-end of watchmaking, even though it's far from the most expensive or the best. It just represents what everyone (except real collectors) think of as a high end watch. Followin...
Toe-in recommendation for stand mount monitors
I would start with them facing straight ahead and listen for a week or so until you get used to them. Then, if you want to fool around, toe them in just a little and experiment from there. There is one school of thought, Spendor in particular, tha...
Pro-Ject phono preamps?
I used to have the tube box SE and I thought it was very good until I tried a Linn Linto I purchased used for $800. The Linn was far better to my ears.
Another Pair of Skeptics Converted
I'm not sure that cable skeptics really say that all cables sound alike - except for the ones who really cannot hear the difference or do not listen for the things better cables can bring to a recording. I think the more educated skeptics say that...
PCD302 Superb Conditioner from JMF Audio
Interesting - barely a week goes by that I don't learn of a high-end company I've never heard of before in my 40 years in this hobby. Looks like very nice stuff, but I disagree that AC power is neglected by most of us. I think most people here wit...
Folk/Rock choices that are well recorded
Soundtrack to Inside Llewyn Davis is great. IMO
