Energy damping or energy transfer?
If you were to do a blind AB test w/a system using after-market damping and a system using the factory supplied rubber feet, I doubt you could tell the difference. Yes, TTs need damping, but IMO the magic cones, energy dispersion crystals, maple b...
Tube amp recommendation for $1000
Check out the Quicksilver MiniMites (monos): 25 watts, accept a variety of tubes, are quiet, reliable, inexpensive to retube, and sound killer good. I own them and have been extremely pleased.
Tweeter characteristics
"Precision" in the world of tweeters/high frequency reproduction is a relative term, and what to Brand x owners think sounds precise might sound bright and edgy to Brand Y owners. What your ears hear as a mushy, soft sound is likely a lot closer t...
Advice on popping noise from Audio Aero Prestige
The noises you have are not good. I'd contact the folks who worked on the player and demand that they find the problem and fix it free of charge. And "burn-in" (seemingly the solution to all audio problems these days), will likely do nothing!
Thiel CS 2.4 Vs. Harbeth M40?
I'm glad to see someone else use the word "tone" to describe what the Harbeths (and Spendors) do well. The ultimate question is, "Of these two speakers, which puts a smile on my face with the music I love?" When I first bought my Spendors, I went ...
To bi or not to bi-wire Spendor S8e
I suggest doing a blind test at a dealer to determine your answer if possible. I've experimented w/my Spendors w/the stock jumpers, biwires, etc. and have found that they all sound the same. BTW, some very knowledgable dealers demo their products ...
What new tubes for Cary SLI-80 and where to get?
I don't own the SLI-80, but I recently went through what you are about to undertake. I blew a factory supplied EL34 on my amp and was forced to start doing research. I recommend doing enough research to get a clear idea of how different tube brand...
Thiel CS 2.4 Vs. Harbeth M40?
These are two very diferent speakers. The Harbeth has a more romantic sound, is warmer, and sounds fuller (like real music does in front of the orchestra). The Thiel is more a design from the head. If I had the change, I'd buy the Harbeth in a ski...
Audio Tweak gone bad...similar experiences?
I haven't laughed this hard in a LONG time (seriously, tears here). Thanks, Ben.
Audio Tweak gone bad...similar experiences?
Was the penny oxygen-free? Sometimes the OF pennies, in a desperate attempt to obtain oxygen (especially the older ones), will steal oxygen from nearby components. (I've had tweeters, CDPs, even cables go like this.) I think you had such a penny, ...
Need to turn volumn up to break in speaker cable?
Actually, the break-in discs realign the binary code structure that your amp's transformer sees, therefore increasing the oxygen capacity of your cables. And everyone knows that it's touching your nose w/your ELBOW that makes imaging better. Geez,...
Bispeakering...am I the only one?
No . . . many people are bispeakering, and help is available.
REL is dead. Long live REL
Terrat: Chill, dude! I don't support the WTO either, but REL's success is not due to the sheepish (I like to say "just more intelligent than the average citizen") nature of audiophiles. It IS due to the fact that they make KILLER subs.
What music do you want to play really loud?
Yeah, Jayboard. Pretenders just get better the louder the volume goes. Also Rush's YYZ, Zeppelin's Achilles' Last Stand, Petrouchka, Heart's awesome guitar work on Magic Man.
Speaker Selection
I've heard the Sonus model and thought it was a superb sounding speaker -- very engaging, dynamic, and just plain musical and fun. Haven't heard the others. A word of personal experience, though: Buying speakers based solely on reviews (even on Au...
