Your Favorite Austin City Limits
David Byrne was excellent after "look Into the Eyball" came out. Other notables are John Prine, Waylon Jennings, Steve Winwood, and Rodney Crowe, Tom Waits, Bela Fleck, John Hammond, and too many more. But SRV 2 was just wicked good, and yes, "eff...
Best movies last two years
I had high hopes for Sin City, but as I sat watching it, I couldn't get past the fact that its "plot" did not adapt to the screen no matter how technically strong it was. A History of Violence is a very good film w/violence that supports a plot (a...
Audio Research Pre Amp LS15
iPod has a mini jack on it that allows a stereo connection to a preamp. Simply choose a line-in source as you would any other component. I run my MacMini iTunes into my rig like this, and it sounds great (plus I can EQ the signal on crappy recordi...
contradictory communication
It's very possible IMO for a component/system to be warm and transparent. I base this on what a live orchestra sounds like -- warm and transparent, like liquid. There is treble extension thru 20,000Hz, and violins and trumpets are smooth. True det...
What are the best tubes for a VTL TL 2.5 Preamp?
I can say that when I replaced my amp's stock China 12AX7s w/NOS RCAs, the amp immediately sounded MUCH better. And I'm not talking subtle differences here. I would do some research before buying, but you definitely want to get those Chinese tubes...
I saw Pearl Jam last night...
I agree that bands and politics should be separate. I also think that most offenders secretly agree and are simply introducing political speeches into their shows out of desperation, a "Someone has do something" mentality. I heard Sanatana last su...
Happy Birthday Miles
Now that I think about it, I listen to more Miles than any other performer, and the reason is that his playing never gets old, just better. My favorite recording, of course, is KOB because it was the first jazz recording I ever heard as a little k...

Yes, My Morning Jacket is a great band live -- definitely get there early.
Conservative Politics & Rock Music
OK, you don't know how often I've thought of posting this exact thread, but I've valued the apolitical tone of Audiogon too much to risk it. Let's face it, different genres of music do attract different types. Country and Christian are mostly cons...
What's wrong with a DVD player as a transport?
I agree w/the conviction that DVD players can make fine CD transports. Back when I first started obsessing w/finding a good-sounding CD player and had a Tjoeb 99, I bought a Sony DVD player (89.00) at my trusty Sony dealer -- supposedly for movies...
Wood blocks underneath components?? snake oil?
Pops, I must warn you against using oak. The acorns act as mini diffusors, plus they are known to lose their leaves in the winter. Stick w/pine. You're on the right track though.
Upgrade from Spendor BC-1: need ideas
I'd stick w/Spendors (SP 2/3s or 1/2s) -- slightly smaller and a very nice sound.
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Best of Flying Burrito Brothers and Marian McPartland Plays Benny Carter.
Best monitor for female vocals?
I agree with Bignerd -- the Spendors really are very difficult to beat in this regard. They have a knack for reproducing the whole voice in a way many other speakers can't quite seem to do.
Spendor 2/3 or 1/2 in small room?
Yeah, the vibration thing w/the Classic series is what makes them sound the way they do. I tried to quell the vibes one time, and the speakers lost whatever it is that makes me want to make a fool of myself playing air guitar.
