What type of breakers are best for audio
Breakers are inferior to fuses, both protection-wise & sound-wise. I've tried some different fuses on my dedicated line & found that a glass fuse sounded brighter/harsher than a ceramic fuse, which was noticably better. This was an intere...
Speaker wire is it science or psychology
The topic has to be a troll, but please consider the writer's perspective: he's looking for a Phase Linear 700! Man oh man - I sold off that junk about 20 years ago...
Speaker Fetish
L&G's please stop I can't take much more of this laughing; a guy's got to breath occasionally. "Welcome to the club" as ole' Joe Walsh would put it. I think I have enough hardware sitting around at the moment for about 3 rigs. Good thing I'm o...
pwr conditioner - vans evers unlimiter
Doug: no experience with The Unlimiter but here's a good alternative. I have the Chang Lightspeed 9900 AMP. 30 amp capacity, has 4 hospital outlets, MOV (varistor) line-transient protection, input & output LED indicators, & does not constr...
sometimes you just need to tap your toes
The older vinyl ZZ's were MUCH better, before someone started messing around with the mix! They added false ambience & totally wrecked some amazing material IMO.
Speakers like Linn close to the wall ??
Matt I'll likely be hung in the public square for this, but here goes: Klipsch - both the LaScala & Belle are designed to work "against the wall". I have my Belles toed in (also out of necessity) 3" to 12" from the walls. As Mgolllieb suggests...
tube preamp with satisfying low end?
I experienced similar dissatisfaction with the VTL 2.5 & even the 5.5. However the Adcom (I've never heard one) is Stereophile class A isn't it? Was it warmed up thoroughly Sib? I mean powered on for at least a full day? If not that could expl...
SS Power Amp/Tube Pre--on/off
Bob you need to do some testing. I also really hate to power off my SS amps. But even unplugging your interconnects is probably unsafe, because while doing so, large transients can occur which may damage tweeters, etc. You need a DVM (pocket volt...
Innertube Cone Tweak
I had tried a tube under my amp but it was really lame. Never tried it elsewhere as I use Black Diamond shelving on top of vibrapods, with the components on cones pointing toward the shelf. However there are cones made of different materials which...
Best HDCD player under US1600
Pick up used EAD Ultradisk 2000 was $2500 list now you can find one for around or under $1200. Sweet detailed & very smooooth.
mit mh750cvt series2 with ist sp.cables
MH 750 works VERY well for me with the DNA-1. It works so well that I recently upgraded to the MH750 Magnum so my MH750+ is now available; attractive price. If you have brightness then definitely don't go with Kimber, or any silver cable.
help blown speakers
Check with Val L speakerworks in Chicago: very knowledgable & helpful folks. http://www.vanlspeakerworks.com/
Coping in an Age of Uncertainty
I've said this any number of times: get yourself an HDCD compatible player Today! It's the only backward compatible format which makes all of your 16 bit CD's sound much better. There's much more 20 bit software available even Today than the compe...
Leave amps on or off?
I always leave my sold state gear fully powered up. It takes at least a full day or so to peak from a cold startup. Thermal cycling reduces equipment life, which is another consideration beside the higher electric bill. The energy isn't really was...
cd spray tweaks?
I have experienced good results applying the label side of CD's with "Endust for Electronics", first sprayed on a blue lint-free paper towel before applying. Some discs exhibit an enhancement(cleaner sound = less grain), others not. This is a simi...
