Words from the Wise -Part 2
My list begins with things that cause listener fatigue and are cause for dismissing the audition as a failure...1 - unpleasant high frequency hash, ring, or sizzle.2 - annoying mid-range glare.3 - muddy lower midrange and upper bass.If these are n...
Which preamp- Pass Labs X1 vs Cary SLP2002
I use a Pass Aleph P and an Accuphase amp to drive my Proac 3.8s. I like the P's variable gain adjustment. It also has more resolution and is quieter than the Air Tight and Rogue tube preamps I have used previously. Although I have heard that Proa...
B-wire - four cables or jumpers?
Brianjh, search the archives here and you will find most, not all, agree that biwiring is advantangeous. There is a good article on the technical aspect of biwiring over at Audio Asylum by Jon Risch. I personally believe it sounds better on my Pro...
Out on the tiles...with speaker spikes.
I have a beautiful black tile floor. I use Walker 1/2 inch discs to protect it. A bit more expensive than the other suggestions, but definitely worth it.
Help- 60 cycle Hum - ground loop problem
I use the MAGIC cable TV ground isolation transformer. No hum at all! This will keep the house ground out of your interconnect shields. This should keep you from having to use cheater plugs. Remember, code in most places requires the incoming CATV...
A challenging question
Hey Davemon, I would like to do the same thing. Right now all I have is standard audio out with RCA jacks. This output can be controlled with my cable remote which briefly displays an on-screen bar graph. The best I can offer is hope. The cable TV ...
Speakers for very near-field listening?
I second S7horton. I use a pair of Atoms in system no.2. I open their backs, rewired them with Kimber 4TC and the result was quite impressive for such a budget speaker!
HT room new construction - room treatments, etc
When we built our basement AV room, we used the wall and corner treatments by Kinetics Research. We got the custom color, fabric and design options to fit the room decor. I placed the speakers (Proac 3.8s) at the Cardas positions and two of the Ki...
Sony 9000es DVD/CD/SACD Player as Transport?
I use mine to drive an external Accuphase DAC with excellent results. Although there are many better transports, having this double as a DVD player in my home theater is currently worth the trade-off. Using the 9000 with the DAC is clearly superio...
Out of the mouth of babes
I agree with the others, stick to the electrical code 100%!
any tried Still Points?
I have not tried them, but if you are new to isolation tweaks I suggest you experiment with the low cost Vibrapods. Try several different versions of them under different components and note the changes. Once you are comfortable that there are ind...
Cardas Machined RCA Caps.???
Yes, but you must cover all unused jacks to realize the difference. I mentioned in an earlier thread that I covered all unused jacks in my system for several weeks. I then removed them all and noticed that they did indeed lower the noise floor. I ...
Floating the Ground
Bundy, I hope the problem is just with the unit itself. Ground loops are a pain, but using a ground isolation transformer (MAGIC) on the incoming cable TV line eliminated all my ground problems and I do not need cheater plugs. Good Luck.
Maggie Fans, what will u miss if you give them up?
Ake, when I switched from my Maggie IIIAs to Proac 3.8s, I noticed the following differences.Sound Stage...The Maggies throw a much bigger sound stage due to their larger physical size.Setup and HF dispersion, imaging, focus...The Proacs are much ...
Tube amp for planar speakers and SS pre
The best tube amp I have heard for bass extension in a panel speaker was the Air Tight ATM-2. It has a very conservative rating of 80wpc and several have appeared here on Audiogon for sale this year. I had the pleasure of listening to this amp dri...
