Earplugs for conerts?
In a similar setting, I was absolutley shocked to see how many people were NOT wearing hearing protection at the US Grand Prix when I attended it in Indianapolis. These F1 cars are LOUD, and with stands on both side of the front stretch, the sound...
What is pink noise?
I believe pink noise, and white noise, are first of all random noise, like hiss, used for testing electronics and acoustics. I think that pink noise is equal enery per ocatve and white noise is equal energy per decade. For example, pink noise woul...
Dedicated listening room 25' L X 9' H and ? W
15.45 feet wide for a 25 foot deep room. Use the Golden Ratio which is 0.618 = (sqrt(5)+1)/2This is also the ratio used in the Cardas speaker placement formula. This is a truly remarkable number with numerous websites dedicated to it:Fibonacci
Easy to discriminate between DAC ??
Sc53 last sentence is right on target! I might add my opinion for digital listening... real live musical instruments and voices do not have edges around them. The other unrealistic digital artifacts I have noticed are an unnaturally forward sounds...
Get Back
I thought all the rights to the Beatles work was purchased by Michael Jackson... or was it just the Apple Records?
power cords- problems using too many cords ?
Have you allowed sufficient time for the power cords on your DAC and transport to break in? Do you leave them turned on all the time? If you replaced the cords on your DAC and transport with your preamp and amp still turned on, try turning everyth...
Does Sony DVP-S9000ES Feeds Digital Out For CD?
Yes, the 9000ES sends a 44.1/16 signal to the digital output. You must set this feature with the on-screen menu.
Do you leave your SS amp on all the time?
Yes, on all the time, except during thunderstorms when I shut down and unplug everything.
Where are you? Do you know what your FM is doing?
Atlanta... one good Jazz and one good classical station. The Pop, Rock, Country, 80s, Oldies and Rap stations provide a clean and powerful signal but they are definitely compressed. There is also an Alternative station that plays stuff that sounds...
Does anyone's cable TV provider offer HDTV?
Follow-up... Comcast says that they will soon offer HBO and Showtime in HDTV here in the Atlanta area. My concern is that the 3 major networks are offering many of their prime time programs and sports in HDTV in 2003, but Comcast has only mentione...
From tubes to solid state. What do you loose...
Over the years I have owned tube and solid state preamps (active and passive) and amps (tube, class A and class AB) in every combination (but I never tried the ss preamp - tube amp combo). It is really a matter of preference as the sounds of each ...
Balanced or Unbalanced, which way to go?
There are lots of posts on this subject in the archives, but it is worth repeating my experience. I like the use of a preamp, it renders the capacitance and inductance of cables to the amp less critical. I also feel the use of a preamp really help...
Sony 9000es with DAC annoying lock/unlock
Mine does the exact same thing. For DVD playback, I use the 5.1 downmix to 2 channel feature which sends a 48/16 signal to the DAC. Redbook CD playback sends a 44.1/16 signal, and of course no SACD digital is output, period. Since I have no SACD c...
how far from rear wall should proac response2.5 be
My Proac 3.8s are 7&1/2 feet from the back wall and they sound great. I have a large room (L shaped approx. 16 by 25) and I used the Cardas room placement guide. I also do not toe them in. Good luck!
grainy sounding high end system
Are you using any type of AC filter? You may also benefit from upgraded power cords. Both of these items are very good at removing the problems you describe. Check the threads for suggestions, and you can generally buy these things at half list or...
