Time Phase/Coherence-Vandy 5A vs. SL M-1
After reading Larry's post, just a few questions based on the information presented in the same. Doesn't the Soundlab exibit comb filtering do to the different path lengths from the diaphragm to the listener? Something to that effect shows up in t...
Why a second Vandersteen sub?
Two subs load the room better. This creates a more seemless integration with the Sigs. It also allows for ultimately more total bass power(plays louder.) Lastly, some music has channel separation down into the lower frequencies. Two subs allow you...
Time Phase/Coherence-Vandy 5A vs. SL M-1
Planars do have problems that are measurable. However, all speakers are a trade off in one way or another. Refering to the Soundlab, If you look at the transfer function and impulse response graph, it is fairly easy to see what Richard was talking...
What is "west coast sound"
West coast sound has meant relatively bright with a midrange emphasis. It was coined back in the sixties. We had the West coast sound as in JBL Century 100's and Advents with the better bass but recessed highs and more bloom. The east coast sound ...
Are my speakers supposed to do this?
DC would push the cones one way or the other. The only way DC could cause a cone to move back and forth would be the DC alternating between positive and negative like switching the leads on a battery. For example, if you take a "D" cell and connect...
Vandersteens without sock and surrounding poles?
I don't really think removing the sock and poles will help much in all honesty. I feel this is going a little over board on the tweak end IMO. Vandersteen does make a 3A Signature that you can buy with no sock and no poles. I would imagine he'd se...
Is the B&W Signature 805 less harsh than the N805?
You might want to research your room a little. The B&W's are not harsh and I don't believe your electronics are. You might want to look at room reflections especially the first one off the side wall. Changing cables and all that junk is just g...
Best tube preamp with phono stage and mono switch?
Look at an Audible Illusions M3A. It has what you are looking for and will give any of the others a run for the money.
Dahlquist DQ-10 - did they use Advent woofers?
it is the same woofer used in the Large Advent that Kloss designed. As above, it is probably the surround. However, search around and you may be able to find a replacement woofer. I've seen a few.
Need Help With Vandesteen 2WQ Sub
When you first plug the sub in after it has sit overnight, you should hear a low level, but solid, thump. If you don't here this thump, the sub is not turning on. It does not have an on/off switch. It turnes on with the power. If the sub thumps on ...
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
Sean, The new APJ is now mailed and is no longer an online download. He just offered a new watchdog for subscribers only(#16.) For anyone desiring to see a pretty unbiased account of audio, read Hardesty's journals. The first two are a free downlo...
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
Richard Hardesty has just added a couple of "Watchdog" reports to his web sight on the very issue of what is being discussed here(from new stuff at the show). Imagine a proffessional reviewer saying some of the things he says in these articles. Go...
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
Just to add something to Sean's post since he mentioned AR, there was that big fuss between the large Advent(a sealed system) and the JBL Century 100(which was ported)back in the 70's. The JBL had a lot of frequency deviations but would play much ...
Best Budget Preamp, whats out there?
Daltonlanny, In the years that I have try to contribute to this sight, I have to say this is pretty much a first! Two guys agreeing on something. Your suggestion of the 565 is good for a bottom basement unit. It's sins are of omission. It may not ...
McCormack DNA .5 vs DNA 1
In my opinion, after using both, the .5 is a better sounding piece. The DNA 1 is more powerful but it does, beyond doubt in my experience, sound a little harder. personally, I have found that the fewer electronics the signal must pass, the better....
