Best Budget Preamp, whats out there?
I agree with the Audible Illusions suggestion. Used, they are a steal. Why this preamp has seemed to lose its appeal is beyond me. I still consider them one of the best at any price. I currently use an L-2.The tubes balance out the sound of the Mc...
Best Amp for 2000$ or lower. New or Used
A Belles 350a. Little known but man will it play music. 250/ch See the review at www.Soundstage.Com
too much hype in audio
I have always loved the music. My problem is I'm always searching for something to get that "Little more" out of the system. As a consequence, I spend a lot of money I should have kept. In addition, you're right, it does distact from my listening ...
Best sub 1k tube pre amp for ss amp
Look through the archives. This has been hashed and rehashed a bunch. Most will tell you CJ, ARC and I will say an Audible Illusions.
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
Sean, I think your paragraph on setup is probably the most important bit of information to come from this thread. I understood this many years ago when I first got into Vandersteen. These speakers are a pain in the butt to get set up correctly and...
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
The Vandersteen 2's and 3's use a design where the enclosure is sealed with an active acoustic coupler below 35hz which does act somewhat like a passive radiator reacting to the front woofer. However, since the drivers are active, it gives you the...
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
In the imperfect world of speakers, it would be nice to see a speaker at least within + or - 3db over a range of say 40-20k. The closer the speaker is to flat, yes, I believe it has a better chance at being accurate. As I stated, I believe everyth...
Last Speakers Aerial 20T or Vandersteen 5A
I'm sold on time aligned and phase coherent speakers. With that said, I'm biased for the Vandersteen. It also allows for fine tuning of the bass (as Sean points out above) and it's much less money for just as well built but more accurate speaker.T...
Current Trends in multi thousand dollar speakers
There was a big Legacy Focus discussion in this forum a while back. From some of the positive responses for the Legacy, I would have to agree with Sean's opinion that the market is driven by certain "Inaccuracies" in design to please the masses.In...
Audioquest Cheetah vs Audioquest Anaconda
You had better listen to both (if possible) in your system. I personally liked the Anaconda OK and didn't really warm up to the Cheetah. It sounds somewhat leaner with slightly tilted frequency extremes. It's really hard to put into words but it l...
i hate to ask but I Really Need Help
I know a lot of homes(older) in the South did not use the regular three wire outlets with neutral, hot and ground. Instead they used the neutral as ground(there is no actual ground wire) I have run into problems actually grounding and/or installin...
Your thoughts on the DQ-10 vs Vandersteen 2C
I agree with that suggestion. It was on the hot side. I believe that was a Philips he used. I could have a great time IF I had all the speakers I have bought and sold over the years.
Your thoughts on the DQ-10 vs Vandersteen 2C
The original 2 series speaker was not time aligned and the DQ10 probably did sound better but all of that has changed. The DQ10 made an attempt at time alignment by the way the drivers were mounted(even though it wasn't) and also used a minimum ba...
CD player for a warm system
Look at the Rotel players---somewhat forward with plenty of punch.
Need Equation for Hiqh Pass Filter capacitor
6.26 x crossover frequency x input resistance of the amp. The set crossover point will be 3db down with the figured cap. It will roll at 6db/octave. This will give you the cap in uf. Hope this helps.
