Amp for Martin logan CLS Originals
The CLS 1 (the original) had a high impedance and was a match made in heaven for tubes, even OTLs.The CLS 2 was an example of Martin-Logan's attempts to make ESLs compatible with transistors. It was very low impedance, 0.5 ohms at 20KHz. Almost an...
Reel to Reel decks
FWIW, you don't want to just 'change tape' for a different sound (unless maybe you are looking for an effect??). To get the best out of the machine, if you use a different formulation the machine should be calibrated properly to use that tape. Oth...
Need help fast - Unbalanced Preamp to Balanced Amp
Mitch2, my advice if you look for a preamp is look for one that is fully differential and balanced internally, not just at the inputs or outputs. If it is built right, the length or quality of the interconnect will be of no consequence.
TriPlanar Tips
The Triplanar has a extensional damping material on the arm tube to reduce mid and high frequency resonance artifacts. This is one of the reasons this arm is so neutral- most arm manufacturers do little to address this issue.
Need help fast - Unbalanced Preamp to Balanced Amp
Hi Al, I would not use that transformer for this application, because it does appear to leave you susceptible to the cable due to the high impedances involved.Instead if you are running a single-ended preamp to a power amp, I would use something t...
Need help fast - Unbalanced Preamp to Balanced Amp
Most line transformers, including the ISOMAX are designed to load at 600 ohms or thereabouts. If you don't load the transformer it can ring. The best place to load it is at the end of the interconnect that it is driving, if that is an XLR you can r...
6922, 6CG7 or 6H1n which one sounds best? Repost
The answer is that the tube that the preamp is optimized for is the one that will sound the best (lowest distortion- smoothest sound with greatest detail). The best sounding of tube of the list is the 6CG7 which is essentially a 6SN7 in a 9-pin min...
Dynavector XV-1s loading question.
The load will generally reduce capacitive effects in the cable, so I have been an advocate of cartridge loading on this account, so long as the load does not over-damp the cartridge. If handled correctly, this means that the phono cable will not ha...
Great 16 ohm Full Range loudspeakers
The MA-1 is very comfortable with 8 ohm speakers and a good number of 4 ohm speakers. In fact its smaller brother works fine with 8 ohm speakers too.Impedance peaks can be dealt with by Zobel networks if the designer of the speaker was expecting t...
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
T_bone, you got it. Thanks.
For Fans of Bruno Walter's "Indian Summer"
I'd like to hear his Beethoven 6th and 7th... have you tried those yet?
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
Its easy enough to find designers that will argue :)Connectivity is another thing altogether so let's explore it.Can you hear a difference between cables that go between your stand alone phone stage and the amplifier?if no => connectivity is no...
What is the Phono stage you have finished with?
Raul is correct- as soon as you break the phono stage out to a seperate box, you have an connectivity problem with whatever is downstream. You see, one of the functions of a line stage is to control the interconnect cable. I don't see any phono sta...

What do you mean by 'real time'? Hours- days- weeks, years?
Tubes on top and Class D on the bottom
Tgrisham, I think it all depends on the power output. Now for an amp that simply goes below 20Hz... well, most of them do. But to play 20Hz properly you usually need to go lower than that. There are many tube amps that go to 10Hz. The thing that r...
