Do any amps have 6 ohm taps for 6 ohm impedance?
Actually you should not loose very much power at all, perhaps a few watts if using the 6 ohm tap. As mentioned earlier, try it and see what you like. I think you will find ts not that critical.

Tvad, we are not so strict about the loading on the M-60. I've seen it work fine with speakers that dip to 4 ohms at crossover points, IMO its always something that you try and see how it works. But Thom has had his M-60s for well over a year and ...

We've done tape EQ for a few customers, so they could run direct from the head to the preamp. So far it seems as if that works quite well. Its nice if you can get a new tape EQ unit, as often 3-motor transports may not need that much work, but the...

Mapman, although I prefer OTLs myself :) if I had a set of field-coil powered Classic Audio Loudspeakers (which are about 99-100 db, about 3 db more than their Alnico versions), I would not hesitate to try out one of the DeHavallind SETs and treat...
Atma-sphere 3.0 to 3.1
Pubul57, thanks, I'm glad you like it. The 3.1 update reduces distortion at full power by about 90%; that translates to additional transparency with smoother delivery- its amazing how that can affect things, even in the bass, although a string bas...
Paranoid on Tube Amp Install
Speakers cannot cause any amp to catch fire. I've been in the amp business in one form or another (worked in serveal service centers and then in manufacturing) for 37 years. So far I have yet to see an amplifier catch fire, tube or solid state. Th...
The pivoted arm experiment is over
Lewm, I've not heard the Trans-Fi yet but I have customers that really like it.

Most high efficiency speakers have fairly tight tolerances in the voice coil gap which makes them very reactive. The back EMF they present to amplifiers that use a lot of feedback is enough to confound the amplifier, as the feedback signal thus co...

Mepearson, excellent work. I think you have shown what I have felt for a long time, which is that time has passed the FR arms by. I do not agree otherwise that this test is conclusive regarding your other thread, but if what you wrote is indeed wh...

A tape machine that is a bit of a sleeper is the Magnacord. They were made in 7 1/2 and 15 ips versions, although seems to me the 7 1/2 ips (with 3 3/4 as the slow speed) is a bit harder to find. There was the 724 and 1024; like any older machine ...
Woofers Gone Wild
Before you add a rumble filter, I would take a look at the specs of the cartridge and the effective mass of the arm. They should combine to create a mechanical resonance between 7 and 12 Hz. If you get outside that window (for example if your cart...

I've heard the Classic Audio Loudspeaker, both T-1 and T-3 many times. The recent field-coil versions are remarkable. They are faster and just as detailed as the best electrostatics, yet very relaxed, and image easily. They are also very cohesive....
Magnepan 1.7
We recently did an installation with our M-60s are our local dealer who has the 1.7 in stock- so I heard it with our amps. IMO this is an excellent speaker and a nice upgrade from the prior 1.6; no doubt why this speaker has been big news as Magna...
Amp or blocks for Total Eclipse
The Total Eclipse is easy to drive. We can drive them with our smallest amp, but most of our customers usually use either our M-60 or MA-1 for them. The speaker makes good bass down into the lower 20s and we found it easy to set up. They are desig...
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
Unsound, its not. Almost any service shop would have such gear though, you could easily set up this test at almost any one of them simply because the speaker and the amp really are of no consequence in the test- the results are that profound. How t...
