End of Snell Acoustics?
IMO The type A was OK but they peaked at the Snell B. None of their speakers after that ever reached the same heights (no pun intended, it was their tallest speaker too).
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
Unsound, if they disagree, its only because they have not been studying what happens that is different between tubes and transistors with respect to how they drive a load. Roger Sanders and I already went around on this one, and if you ask Roger W...
Woofers Gone Wild
Davidsss, my suggestion is the same for you; if you can, try a cartridge that has a lower compliance figure. That will reduce the woofer 'wobble' and actually improve the bass at the same time.
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
Here are some speakers that are not well driven by transistors: ESLs (too bright, no bass unless the speaker is only a foot or two from the wall), horns (usually very shrill, due to the reactive nature of the drivers), full-range high efficiency d...
45 Amps
I have a set that I built up. I started with SET but then went to push-pull with them. The push-pull circuit sounds **way** better, but there are no p-p 45-based amps in production.
SET Preamps
We make some of the very few tube preamps that are **not** SET... ye olde Dynaco PAS-3 is SET, as is the Citation 1, many of the earlier ARC preamps, the CAT, the Joule Electra; Al is correct- most tube preamps are 'SET'. The term really is for *a...
Atma Sphere S30 amp
Weebeesdad, how that seems to work is that if the amp does not work with the speaker due to impedance, its a moot point as to the effect the ZERO has, and in practice it does quite well. The gray area is in dealing with speakers that are right on t...
Atma-sphere 3.0 to 3.1
Yes, lower output sources work much better with passives. Its beyond me why so many DAC manufacturers insist on putting so much output voltage in their equipment- my guess is that they have no idea, no clue on how amplifiers work. The volume contro...
Atma-sphere 3.0 to 3.1
Passives work fine as long as you don't have any interconnect cable. Otherwise they tend to limit bass and punch as you turn the volume control down. That's why we offer the option for the M-60s. The MP-1 is specifically designed to control the in...
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
Unsound, well, not vehemently at least :) All the things I have looked at in the last 35 years or so point to tubes more closely obeying the rules of human hearing than transistors, mostly due to better linearity. So for the most part, I would bui...
What phono preamps are balanced
Davidsss, most tonearms are balanced sources; IOW you do **not** have to do anything with the wiring, only the interconnect cable between the arm and the preamp.Even an old BSR or Garrard from the 1960s is a balanced source!
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
Unsound, for your answer:http://www.atma-sphere.com/papers/paradigm_paper2.htmlTubes will not drive all speakers 'correctly' and of course there are speakers that cannot be driven by transistors. However I am pretty sure that this thread is assumin...
Atma Sphere S30 amp
FWIW the reports we have say that the S-30 drives the VSM easily, as well as the TSM.
Atma-sphere 3.0 to 3.1
We've got a lot of people that offer their favorites there, personally I don't play with the NOS tubes that much- I buy LPs and CDs instead :)The Ken-Rad and Sylvania metal-based chrome-dome get the highest marks in that location, followed by the ...
Power output of tube amps compared to solid states
Unsound, sounds like right here is the point where you are going to have to try this out yourself rather than relying on other's input. I've only been offering the 'why' behind the experience.
