Have Passive Preamps Finally Come of Age?
@mrdecibel  Overload margin. Our preamp can make over 30V into 10Kohms without clipping. Its nice to know that no matter what signal gets thrown at it, its distortion will be difficult to measure with the best test equipment even when driving the ...
Have cartridges been known to fail (Grado)?
I've had cartridges fail or seen them fail many times, as I put myself through college by servicing consumer electronics. My Transfiguration Orpheus lost one channel for no reason- they replaced at no charge, a Grado lost a channel, again replaced ...
Help me pick a phono, pre and cart
You're talking about the new tubes, not the expensive vintage NOS tubes that are by far superior to the any new tube. 12at7 is what you use? The very best of this type can be $50-150 each. Same with phono stages. The NOS tubes are extremely exp...
Have Passive Preamps Finally Come of Age?
Correct MrD, as Nelson Pass says, today we have way to much gain (voltage) with the sources we have. He's not the only one to say that- its been a beef of mine for years. Whoever came up with the Redbook specs at Phillips and Sony blew it on this ...
Help me pick a phono, pre and cart
@chakster Just a FWIW: we get about 10,000 hours out of our power tubes and warranty all the tubes in our gear for a year. This thread is about phono gear however, not power amps.
Running CDP directly into MC275??
It better. You probably don't need even that. But its not bad to run your control all the way up. If you can clip the amp, you don't need anymore gain.OTOH if that's not happening an active will sort things out.

Folks, Raul is a digital aficionado. He’s not into vinyl so much as he appears to be into trolling. You will all note that he did not deny my assertion- although he *said* he had heard our preamp, he does not deny that he *didn’t* when I called hi...
Non-audiophile needs help with older system.
It might be. Getting the right blend is usually the issue, but once you get that then you find out how much more interesting certain pieces of music actually are :)  It can be nice for higher volumes as well...
What is the best OTL out there?
I love that Bernings amps get picked apart yet when someone says that they use an autoformer after the output of a OTL the only thing heard is the crickets.I don't think anyone picks apart the Berning- its an excellent amplifier, a brilliant des...
Phono stage can minimize tics and pops on vinyl
I hear the noise on a different plane than the music. In life, if someone sneezes from the 2nd balcony, it sounds from a different place than the orchestra.@stringreen I understand this bit very well- its why I prefer vinyl, as any surface arti...
Help me pick a phono, pre and cart
Not much. I would replace the platter pad, and if you want state of the art, the tone arm too (I use the Triplanar). Otherwise the ’table benefits from break in time and so seems to get better the more its used. I’ve yet to hear a tube phono bette...
MAC Autoformers?
Now there are even CAR stereo amps that can run .5 ohms all day at negligible distortion. The problem with not using transformers, even with solid state amps is that 'negligible distortion'.It is the mark of a good engineer to know what is negligi...
Phono stage can minimize tics and pops on vinyl
'P&C' I'm guessing means 'ticks and pops'...The stylus might helps as it might track a different portion of the groove that has less noise, but if your vinyl is undamaged the real benefit comes when you use a stable phono section.
Potential issues using low powered tube amp with electrostatic speakers
There is no doubt, it was the tube amplification. Before I purchased the MLs, I was traveling and when I would be in a new town, I would pop into a high end dealer and listen and quickly decided on the MLs. All the shops powered the MLs with tr...
Phono stage can minimize tics and pops on vinyl
Our UV-1 does not have problems with ticks or pops and its not particularly pricey. Our MP-3 and MP-1 are not that expensive as high end preamps go- cheaper than ARC, cj and many others. Are others charging more for ticks and pops?  As Foghorn Leg...
